Have you...checked the shift linkage? If it's hitting the heat shields underneath the car, chances are it's fallen down or otherwise needs attention...

I would agree with Pmohr! Check the support rod and make sure it has not come loose form it's mount.

anything is possible .... it could be that the selctor rod is hitting the shift rod engagement slot wrong (i.e. if the spring is bad and not retruning the rod to the proper state of "N")

It would require you to open up the trans and see what is wrong. It's not easy to destroy one of the detent srpings (unless you noticed a very difficult shift prior, and something has broken), but as I said ... anything is possible. Dave may have more ideas of what is wrong, I have only done my trans .... he's done a few more from the sounds of it!

Sorry I couldn't be more help ... hope you get it fixed!

Divide the problem.
1) detach the shift rod from the tranny. Put a screwdriver into the bracket and pull/push it into each gear. If you can do this, the problem is not the tranny

2) inspect the shift linkage. you may have to drop the cat to see where it attaches to the shift lever. Also check for a torn shifter bushing.

THen the exact root cause becomes less important - you have to drop the trans and take it apart to solve the problem.

One thing you could consider, slight shot in the dark - is remove the 14mm head hex bolts and see if the springs underneath them are broken. You can still do that on the car, but you will drain tranny oil in the process.

I had the same problem of the selector not moving over into first or second. Turns out my shift selector sensor inside the tranny blew up and a piece got wedged somewhere, not allowing the left rotation of the gear selector. I drained and filled the tranny a few times to flush all the pieces out, and it's been fine since.
