Check Engine Light

Is it common for the CEL to go on then off after a couple of days? If so, what is it telling me?

it is telling you to get him checked out.

usually happens when the ecu detects a fault and then doesnt on 2 consecutive drive cycles. this happens often with loose gas caps. go to autozone and have them check codes. you should have one stored.

Most likely, there really isn't a problem, and the ECU detected a false-positive. However, it wouldn't hurt to go to an auto parts store and have them scan your ECU. There are some codes (such as a bad knock sensor) that won't necessarily trip the CEL.
