Bees in a can
Bees in a can
I put on one of those Ebay y pipes and got the WORST rattling you can imagine! It was so loud that I could hear it with music on. I had double and triple checked the bolts to make sure they were tight. Then I remembered thatI didn't use my o2 sensors. The plugs for the o2 bungs were tight, but there was a bolt in the center of each plug and they were loose as hell. I can't even believe I drove it for a week before I thought of that! After I tightened them up, the noise is gone completely.
just thought I'd share in case any of you guys are having the same problem

No I just cut the wires and tucked them up in the car. The guy who sold me the car removed the CEL bulb so it doesn't bother me there, and there are no negative effects so far.
Of course living in FL there is also no emissions testing
I have just the Y pipe installed now because the headers would have been a pain to install and alot of $ for somone else to install. I have that paired with an ebay "high flow cat" which is actually just a resonator, and it sounds pretty nice. It has a slight thrum while you're standing behind it but only gets loud if you get on it.
I had to grind the holes in the flange for the y pipe out to make it fit, but as I said, I used stock headers so using the ones in the set may change that.
There is a pretty good performance gain from the Y pipe. People shouldn't be so quick to bash ebay, not everyone can afford cattman and stillen.

Bees in a can is all I need to say. And wait 3 years from now... my budget y-pipe still looks awesome after 2+ years and 2 Chicago winters. Plus it isnt even that expensive. Theres more then just cattman and stillen that are cheaper in price and just as good...
I thought you were joking @ first but then I kept reading. That is hilarious and wrong in so many ways...but hey, to each his own.
Hmm.... I have a brand new Budget Y pipe on my car with a stock exhaust, and I can't hear a thing. You can barely hear the car running.
Zack
sooooooo, unplug cel light and nothing lights up now??? and when ur engine seizes and its because u didnt see the oil light light up can we all laugh at you FOREVER???!!! hahahahahahaha, what an idiot........
2. The only reason I didn't use them when I installed the Y pipe was that I didn't have the tool on hand to get them out of the stock y pipe and I was told by a couple people I know that they were not really needed.
3. I saved them and was planning on reusing them all along, I just haven't gotten around to it.
I change my oil every 3k miles and luckily (as was previously stated) I have a whole other light for that.
The front 02 sensors are needed for proper performance because they control the a/f signal that the ECU receives. When those aren't getting any readings, similarly a dead 02 sensor, your ECU has no idea how much gas to send through the injectors. Chances are you're running pretty rich right now.
1. People have mentioned that they are "needed for proper performance" but have yet to say why, or what negative effects there are for not using them.

2. Do you have a large 19mm open sided wrench? You dont have to use the special o2 socket. I never did and I have changed out my Y pipe and both o2s on separate occasions.
3. It takes about 25 minutes to do it...with jacking the car up. If I were you I would just go to autozone and buy new ones since you cut the originals.
I saw a Y-pipe header combo for $200 on ebay yesterday . I think I'll get one and see what happens. Although you can get a warpspeed Y-pipe for $250.

Then on second thought I'll go with the Warpspeed one.

My right bank O2 sensor failed not too long ago. I put it off since the new one was like $100 and figured I'd get around to it whenever. I usually get about 330-350 miles per tank. At the next fill-up I was only at about 270 miles on my tripmeter. Needless to say, I replaced it the next day. And this was only with one faulty O2, I can't imagine how terrible your gas mileage is without both.
