removing/installing front struts...

i found out last weekend that the damn place that installed my strut/spring had put the bearing/insulator(i think that's what it is) upside down...one prob i ran into last week was takin the nut on the piston rod off...my question is...when u turn the nut, is the piston rod suppose to spin with it? if so then how the hell do u take the nut off??? i manage to take off the nut by using a vicegrip on my piston rod...i know that's a no-no...but i had to...anyway...when i went to install everything back i got a lil confused...that black plate cover that sits on top of the spring....how are u to position it?
