Today I installed the OBX short throw shifter into by 98. "Bolt-On" by far. Its true you get what you pay for.Taking the old shifter was a PITA because of rusted bolts and I ended up replacing almost all of them with my own. Just about finished I went to put the factory bolt through the shifter to connect the linkage and it was too big.got another bolt no problem...finished putting it in ,put the shifter trim back on and my **** and went for a ride. 1st 3rd and 5th all hit the top of the trim. i had to take off the metal piece that slides over the shifter and goes around the bearing. it has two studs in it to hold it down so i knocked one out and put a longer bolt with about 5 washers and it works lovely now,doesnt hit the trim. Eventhough these problems i think it was well worth it shifting is crisp now and i really like it compared to stock.

 

i cut my stock today... its the best thing iv done to the car.... i cut it to 7 inches.. its perfect

 

sounds like a pain in the ***. I cut my stock one as well, pretty short, but its still got a long throw to it. I'll probably splurge and just get a B&M eventually.

 

i cut mine in december. Best thing done to the max so far. The shifting is awesome.

 

I got the B&M, but it's hard to get it in 1st and sometime 3rd....I'm looking to get a new shifting rubber (bushing) piece that lets the shifter go to position...I forget the name but the old piece of rubber it's so old.

 

I just got my B&M installed. I am really happy with it, but need to get under the car and adjust where the rod is because my rear throws are short and easy, but the forward throws are longer and harder. Did anyone else have problems with the rear studs on the lower plate. Mine were frozen solid and both broke free. Now I need to nut and bolt them, its just tack welded temporally right now.

 

<---Got b&M as well. At first its fun but after a while its getting a little annoying. The throws are shorter but seem a little rougher. I dunno if rougher is the word but i think whoever has one knows what i mean. Reverse is a bit hard on mine but then again it always was. Im not sure if its the shifter or the royal purple tranny fluid i switched to the same day.
I think i will change to Motul pretty soon which sucks cause RP was like $10 each bottle!

 

i remember cutting mine when i first got my car. Got a lil notchy then it got annoying then i got a B&M and now i lov it. But def. a bang for your buck

 

i got a b&m. I like the height of it and the throw length but its pretty notchy. idk maybe i need to replace the shifter bushing. if i were to do it over again i would just cut the stock to keep the smoothness. but now i have it so i might as well use it.

 

I just put that Royal Purple in as well and yeah it is ffrickin expensive, but so is the Redline stuff. I dont see the fluid causing the shifting though.
I have a poly filled shifter bushing and my shifting always seemed decent but now its begun to tear so I'm going to just go back to a stock one. I would think the more you stiffen up your bushing, the notchier it'd get but I'll be able to tell after Nissan gets in my new bushing (26 bucks)

 

when you guys cut your shifter what did you use for a ****

 

anything that is universal.

 

im still testing stuff out... but i put tape on the shaft and just forced it on...

 

thread it with a tap and use the stock **** or any other threaded ****.

 

so all in all how much of a pita is the install

 

just make sure you dont cut it in the little bend.That will cause a PITA to get on a ****....properly.

 

thats a matter of opinion. you have to get under the car and above the exhaust/heatsheilds. it can be a hassle if your not into that sorta thing

 

yeah i cut mine as well a couple of months ago. i just used a universal one as well. i think i can go a couple of more inches though

 

from what i have heard those universal ***** a junk tho, and the set screws always loosen up on there own

 

yeah those universal ***** are kinda junk unless they really hold on to the shifter well some have these little bolts that never seem to be right and strip out sometimes.... all you need to do this is a 10 12 and 14 socket if i remember and a swivel is a must if you dont take out the cat. my install wasnt that fun because of rusted bolts. i nut and bolted almost all of them myself. the washers are holding up nice so far and everything seems tight still.

where can i get that bushing ??????? thanks!!!!!!!
