Best MPG ever on my 99 this weekend

We went from N.W. NJ up to Boston for the weekend. Filled up in town right before I hit the highway and reset the odo. The car did the whole trip on one tank of gas. 470 miles and the gas gauge wasn't even at the E line yet. Two of us in the car with luggage for the weekend, A/C on doing on average between 70 and 80 MPH.

I guess after 148,000 miles the VQ has finally broken in.

weather and traffic are a big factor of mileage. i live in texas, so i deal with alot of HEATSOAK!!!!! but i can get about 390 miles give or take 10 mi. (70-85mph) i'd sure like to get up to 450+ a tank!

I got 400 on the dot when I put in gas last night. Put in just a little over 16 gallons, which is 25mpg.

That was about 50/50 city/highway with a lot of hard accelerating. If I ever take an all highway trip I shoud have no problem getting 30mpg.

Back when i had my 96 auto, my buds and I would take road trips with her and with just over 220,000 miles i remember getting 29.5 mpg. This summer I took my 95 5spd up to wisconsin for my fathers funeral and on the return trip w/ 2 ppl, a weeks worth luggage, cheese (of course yum) subs (2 L7s), and about 8 plants we still got just over 28 mpg w 150,000 on her.

I get about 28 on highway trips in my 97. I set the cruise control on 80 and enjoy the ride. My 94 got 27-28 too. Haven't done a highway trip in my 2k yet.

1997 max mpgs

Just did a trip from RI to MI. 3 tanks 31+, 32+, and 35+ mpgs. Was suprised - didn't think it was gonna be that good. Now have 175,000 miles on it. (Ran 89 & 93 oct.). It must be broken in now too. (That was driving it easy too 65-70 mph, cruise control, no a/c).

I got a sold 28 on a trip to Michigan once. Otherwise, I usually get ~25 in my mixed driving routine.

you should consider running 93 it taste great and doesnt leave that nasty pre-ignition after taste

thats good mileage for a lower grade though

, i love that pre-ignition comment.

In my 5th gen lower octane did not affect it's highway MPG, just sent my city mpg to **** though got like 20 instead of 25.

I recently did 440mi, at a measly 24.2mpg on a trip to Seattle in the I30t (at ~156k miles) with 3 people, the entire tank at around 25/75% city/hwy mix. I feel like I can easily break 500 miles if I did all highway.

The Maxima, at more than half the mileage less seems to do about the same too. Thank goodness for the large tank.

This!

I get 22.5 driving where I normally need to around here (work, stores, etc.). I recently went to Northern NH and back, and got 27-28 with Cruise set at 70, two in the car, and the A/C on. I highly doubt that I could ever break 30.

I could drive from NY to Ma on one tank... this was when my car was auto (70-85). Now that its 5spd swaped I dont even want to go above 75 because the motors at 3k, worries me to be driving at 3500 rpm for hours. Thats the one thing I hate about the manual trans. Still remember doing 60 under 2k rpm.

why do you worry about the engine being at 3.5k for hours?

Thats something id expect from a 4 cyl not a v6. Im used to being at 2- 2.5k getting up to 3k when im speeding a little, with the engine having some decent power to speed up when needed. Being at 3.5k for hours is just overkill, thats a very high engine speed, in that range you get pretty nice power (which you just dont need while cruising). I used to be on the highway chilling doin 80 relaxing. Now im on the highway squirming listening to the motor (will full bolt ons) screaming at 3.5........That is not relaxing for me... at all.

I guess that's a plus of the automatic...on mine, at 90 MPH the tach is at 3000 RPM...can't argue too much with that. 65 is just over 2000.

It does have a tendency to shift into overdrive every chance it gets, and you have to step on it pretty hard to get it to decide it should kick down a gear or two...that can get annoying.

My parents 99 Taurus is really bad...65 MPH is about 3000 RPM. For a station wagon, it's a lot peppier than one would expect, though...200 HP Duratec in it. They're old and probably wouldn't notice a difference if it only had a 1.6 L 4-Cylinder, though.
