Trans Cracked ... can I "JB" it?

Well .... I pulled my trany out to reshim the diff ... cause it was leaking and I didn't do it right when I did my rebuild a while back. So ... I think I might have figured out why it was leaking - other than the shims being 0.72mm too thin ....

So ... what can I do about this? ???? HELP

This is the hole just above the diff that has a bolt from the engine side to the trans ... and it's cracked.

oh wow...how does that happen?

I don't think I'd JB weld it...but that's just me.
Would it be terribly expensive to have someone actually weld it?

Yeah I knew it was aluminum...but I know aluminum CAN be welded. I say find someone who knows how to weld aluminum and give them a couple bucks. Its not a huge hole or anything...and at least it's pretty thick. Seems like it should be pretty easy to weld (in terms of welding aluminum).

On the other hand...I've seen people pay a pretty penny just to have the swirl valve holes (on the 5th gen LIM) welded up. Who knows...

It would be hard to fit a MIG head in there .... but I am sure it could be done .... just sucks azz to have this. Only thing I can thing that may have caused it was putting the trany back in and using too long a bolt, or a weak freekin housing (around the Diff ... no way! lol)

yes it can be welded ,we have a mig welder that we can also weld aluminum with , any metal shop should be able to do it .it depends on the shop but we would charge 20 bucks ,thats our min. weld charge, and thats probably pretty fair.
it probably happened by using a bolt that was too long .some thing to watch out for when you put it back together.

well ... that's good to know I guess. Now I gotta find a shop that will weld it. The housing around the diff is weak anyway .... so I don't know it was from using too long a bolt, but it coulda been. Still sucks .... my shim should be at the stealership in the morning ... guess I need this welded quick like so I can get it back in.

If it weren't for sheety luck, I wouldn't have any at all. Makes me think that sometimes it's better NOT to have any luck at all.

Thanks all ..... Dave ... Pmohr, were you mates at?

Weld her up, throw it back in. That's what I would do

Then again amazing quality aluminum welding around here only costs me a 6 pack...(helps that I work with said welder).

I agree, get someone to weld it. I wouldn't use JB weld for something like this.

Thanks guys .... guess it's off to the shop(s) tomorrow to find out who will do it and for how much.

Pmohr ... not fair mate! lol I have a guy that does lots of welding, but not on aluminum. I was leary of using JB on it ... cause if it falls off inside the trans, well .... I can kiss this trans (and new bearings) good bye! Two words come to mind here: Catostrophic Failure (not a good speller ... sorry)

get it TIG'd. we'd probably charge $15 for that. it would take about 2 minutes.

edit: the welder needs to be conscious of the threads on the other side of that though. what bolt goes into that?

it's a mounting bolt from the engine side .... the one you need a long extension (several) to reach from the pass side axle well. 17mm IIRC ...

I'm just glad my trany didn't look like that! lol I guess I am fortunate in some ways.

Chillin .... you already had your problems mate, you'll be fine. lol

I agree with Neal, as usual.

Why is the tranny all covered in water? Are you planning to completely disassemble it to dry it out?

Ok ... update, and now for the funny part! Well ... I guess it's funny.

I went to a couple shops, first one quoted me $50 (1 hour labor). This is after they pulled the cap all the way off and I argued that the cap was on and just needed to be welded, but they claimed it had to come off. I don't think so I said and demanded that they repair it now for free. They wouldn't / will not, so .... I guess I am stuck. I took it to another shop, they quoted me .... ready for this BS .... $180 (3 hours labor). Hell ... I can buy a case for less than that I told them and the guy said ... if it were him in this position, he'd plug it with a set screw and locktite. So ... I made a set screw (M 12 at 1.75 pitch) and locktited it in. I hope it works! I cut down the bolt as well to shorten it to fit. What a freekin day!

I think so too mate!

I just hope and pray that it doesn't somehow work it's way loose into the trans. I am not sure it can tho .... the cap left a rounded edge and that is stopping the set screw from coming all the way thru.

WTF ..... do I just need to sell my car and start over? Didn't notice these before, but .... will it make a difference at all?

This is the results of the cap being tore off by numnutz and my repair job.

If that's blue loc-tite it's not going to hold. With the set screw in place I'd clean that with solvent and them JB weld overtop.

What am I supposed to be looking at in the other pictures?

The selector rod slide has a hole in it (and .... not the obvious one that the rod goes thru ... lol) The top pic shows it best, right next to the R gate bolt hole. Is that supposed to be like that, I don't recall it being there before, but it probably was I am guessing. The rod is still in place in the picture. Makes it a bit harder to notice the hole. There's that little housing that the selector rod sits thru, on the side of it is a hole about the size of a dime. This trans! GGGRRRRRRR lol

Thanks Dave~!~

That hole is a feature in the casting.

ok good ... cause it's back together now and it'll be put in in the morning. Reshimmed properly, and I JB welded that set screw. That's the only locktite I have or could find but I did notice it says removable on the bottle. Doh! It's not a good feeling at all to have a hole in your trans case, but it's fixed (I hope).

Thanks again mate!
