Tranny Help
Tranny Help
I am not educated at all about trans. My 5sp shifts great but I am getting this rattling, metalic, chinging? sound mostly noticable in the low rmps like 2700 and below, but that might be because I cant hear it over my exhaust and or intake any higher than 2700-3000rpm. I looked under the hood at the tranny and the thing I am pointing to in the picture was slightly rattling and when I touched it the sound stopped. what is this thing? why is it making noise? hard fix? It has gotten a little bit louder over time but it is not very loud. I feel dumb asking but I really know nothing about tranny's. Thanks for any help.
When I say I touched and the sound stopped it was because my finger stopped the part from rattling and making the noise.

How much play does it have (clutch out, engine off)?
If you have the tools, I suggest pulling the slave cylinder out of the way, then seeing how much it moves then. It's possible that it's rattling against the pivot ball, or against the TOB, or it could indeed be the TOB itself.
Does it have much up/down play, or just forward and back? Check for in/out, as well.

Good post Pmohr! I agree, it may have slipped off the pivot ball under the housing. There's a spring that is supposed to hold it (slips over the ball) in place and it'd be odd for that to come loose, but it's possible I guess. Otherwise, the car shifts ok you say ... how's the clutch feel? Any difference in release points at all?

the slave is the rod that pushes that fork .... 2 (14mm) bolts holding it down to the trans case. it's ok to move a bit and it doesn't seem to be off the peg, so IMO, it's fine and you are just tweeking.
Ok thanks, and maby I am tweeking but the sound it is making is not normal and it has gotten slightly louder over time. So its natural for me to be worried about the part going bad. Like the TOB that people have suggested.
, plus the fact that it goes away when he touches the release fork...TOB.

only while engaging and engaged
i thought this noise was during movement??
if its a stand still noise when clutch s OUT it would be the input shaft bearing
this failed n my 3rd gen
^^^^ How do you figure it's the IPS at all ... from what he has said? Why are you "guessing" at everything when there are people posted on here that have torn down several transaxles before and none of us have thought that by what he is saying? Where do you get the IPS bearings being the cause? ??? ? True, Nissan manual trans have a reputation for bad bearings (both diff and IPS) but you are just guessing and it's obvious. Not to mention that bad diff bearings tend to cause leaks ... which is noticable and common.
Sounds like the fork is a bit loose or it's maybe the TOB .... can you post the noise? Put it on YouTube or something so we can hear it.
Oh .... and 95maxdvt - welcome to the .Org mate!

your right i didnt read closely enough anything you can stop the sound of by applying pressure def isnt in internal bearing
by TOB arent you refering to throw out bearing?
maybe im confused and never had any experience with fork
usually ips causes axle seal leaks correct?
never seen a leak due to diff??
Thnx 4 the welcome lol n next time ill try n read a lil more carefully
