I think Im missing the belt adjustment nut..

Ok, so I decided to go ahead and replace my belts on my Maxi today..

I noticed that my car is missing the adjustment nut that goes down towards the idler pulley, that sits in that small bracket attached to the motor. The Hayne's manual says to loosen this part up via a locknut; but there is nothing there.

I just loosened up the 14MM bolt on the center of the idler pulley; and got the pulley to move Up/Down but I got the new belt installed and held the pulley down snug and tightened the belt back up. I have a 1 second chirp that sounds like belts on startup; I am assuming this is because of the missing peice that I explained..

I also couldn't get the Power Steering belt installed because I couldn't find the power steering pump bolt, and I was already frustrated.

The peice I do not have is the one pointing down towards the pulley system; from what this picture calls the Adjusting Nut. it hangs out in that bracket bolted to the general area around the timing cover

I don't have any actual pics; but I have the one I posted in my edit after you posted. They call it the adjustment nut; Ive searched Courtesy, Pinnacle, Ebay, Rock Auto, Parts Train.. etc. and I can't find nothing.

Is there a part number possibly?

I would have to buy the whole assembly like the link you posted or is it possible to buy just the adjustment nut? The crazy part is Ive never had or experienced a problem related to this; only reason I noticed it was because I decided to put fresh belts on.

Thanks alot Nmex for the help..

i believe you need to buy the whole assembly or you could try a salvage yard.

Yes, I searched around on here and from what I gather it is a real PITA... but I am going to try and tackle it with the wheel off instead of being pulled up on ramps like I was today.

Ive gotta figure out a way to attain a little bit more tension out of my AC Pulley; have a small chirp when turning the motor over. Me and my buddy thought we had it tight enough while applying downward force on the pulley to attain tension on the belt.

Haynes manual tells me to "from below, loosen the power steering pump bolt.. then loosen the tension bolt above the pulley to break tension. This wasn't happening while on jack ramps, I fought with it for a good hour before I gave up.

If yours is the original pulley (from 98) you'd do well to replace the whole idler pulley assembly. I used to avoid the ps belt system, but installing a new belt with the new assembly was easy. The full assembly was under $100, this is a part I wouldn't grab from a junked vehicle.

PS tensioning

It is Pita, I don't have pictures, but the way I did it after hitting a rock that loosed it up so it squeeled, was to approach from the back side with two long extensions 1/2 size as they are cranked hard. I recently replaced my alternator , and thankfully didn't have to touch that one again. I'm getting too old for that.
