auto vs manual

hey guys

my first max was a 96 se-5 that was originally my dad's that I "inherited" . I loved that car and treated it like it was my baby. That is...until my sister decided she needed cigarettes and suddenly knew how to drive a 5 speed....she obviously didn't and rear ended an acura..It's been a little over a year since I last drove a max. About 3-4 days ago I test drove a 99se auto that I fell in love with, though I still feel that I won't have that same feeling I used to get when driving her. I will extremely miss my five speed baby and don't know how I could adjust to the auto, how do you guys with auto's feel about your max's? Is it still a joy to drive them all the time? I'd love to hear about it.

Find one at some dealer or a seller from Craigslist and test drive it. Only you'll know if you'll like it. Everyone else is subjective in their own way.
I find the 4th gen gearbox one of the worst (compared to a Honda) but I would never buy an automatic.

it was just an example ... I've had a few cars until (and drove some more) now and the maxima has the worst gearbox; I just bought one although the guy who told me to buy it said I'll be disappointed in the gearbox. I still think that with a better gearbox, this particular car (99 SE) would be the perfect car. Maybe mine has some problems ... I won't deny that!

with the risk of discovering that there's something wrong with my gearbox ... I'll give you an example: when I change 2nd to 3rd, in my civic and g20, I just push the gear lever and it's just like it's going straight in the next. In my max, if I do this as fast as I'm used to, it seems like it gets stuck somewhere between 1st and 3rd; I have to release it for half a second and then put it in 3rd. Same thing with 3rd-4th.

Later edit: maybe I should have said gearbox lever instead of gearbox ...

I never had a problem with the gearbox on my 96, I wanted to know if people are satisfied with their autos. I never really saw many modified autos (besides some people like chernmax's 6th gen)

Not a fan of the RE4F04A...just killed my 4th. TCC seized up, and the pan had more metal than fluid.

5MT swap is a (slowly) ongoing project.

btw, Does anyone know the Gear ratio of our manual maxies? My friends SVTfocus is 12:1 he said for a 6 speed. I know ours is better plus 5speed imo is better as least in a drag. Longer gears, Less shifting. but I would like to own a 6 speed someday.
when I drove a 6sped spec V is was a pain, The gears were made close, and Reverse was a pain to get into.

I also drove a 6speed Corvette, Didnt like that either, and a 5speed accord. That was ok, but I like the maximas shifting besides the fact that it is like a rowboat with a broom handle lol... so shortshift FTMFW!

Well I just recently came into ownership of a 97 Maxima SE. I had never driven a manual tranny before so I was a little nervous about it at first. Now after driving it for several months I love it, and I would prefer a standard of an auto anyday.

I had an automatic 00 sentra once uugh. I prefer the 5 speed specially as the car goes into higher mileage. Althought my gf 5at accord is pretty impressive.

my max is an auto, but no problems with the tranny but it just feels slugish at times. For example, when u driving at regular speed like 40-45 then u step on the brakes bc some idiot in front stop short, then wen u take off again, its like it becomes sluggish and takes awhile to pick up its self.

thanks guys, because if you read the first post i was asking people with AUTOS how the feel about their cars, not how you'd prefer a 5-speed :\

Which is how many of the auto guys feel, that they'd much prefer a 5MT.

when my car was an auto.. (now 5 speed) and i have to say that auto is WAY better on the highway... the damn 5 speed is at like 3.5k at 75mph... that sucks

also i liked the auto better cuz first gear wasnt like a damn tractor like it is in the manual..

My auto seems to treat me okay. Occasionally i can get the tires loose off a dead stop but usually thats not the case. I just dont like it when you want to give the car a little more gas without downshifting a gear. But ill admit i do like it when it comes to traffic in denver. I hate stop and go with a standard transmission. But like others say, id take a 5 speed over an auto. Just the fact that its more fun to drive.

it doesn't really matter to me either way. 5 speeds are fun but i don't mind the automatic. automatics and cruise control are the lazy man's paradise.

That's weird mine is @ 3K @ 78-80mph. Check your tire size. Plus a Standard is better in Gas on the Highway believe it or not. The engine is not working as much.

O and you think that is bad. My friends SVT focus(pos btw and slow. lol) for a 6 speed with a gear ratio of 12:1 is at 70mph @ 3.3k rpm.

My first max was a 96 GLE auto and I loved it and was pretty happy with the performance and convenience of an auto. But then I got a 95 SE 5 speed and really like it better than the auto. The 5 speed is far more fun to drive.
I still have both the auto and 5 speed. They both drive nice, but I miss my 5 speed when I don't drive it much.

If you've ever had a 5 speed (which you have), you may not be happy with an auto.

That is just my opinion.

your 95 looks great

I'm hoping I could make a decent amount of money this summer, and throughout next year to save up for a 03 6mt, Seems i'll stick with my 99se auto , i'll post pics of her soon.

have an auto and a 5spd, the 5spd is much more fun than the auto, more control blah blah blah, the auto just makes u lazy, and it is a bit sluggish when u are trying to pick up speed quickly, takes to long to kick down, it still fun once its in the right gear. but u will not be satisfied with the auto coming from a 5spd, keep searching for another one, 4th or 5th gen is what u should be looking for
