throwed a 0401 code

The intake air temp sensor seems to have shorted. Now I have to get another one. But will driving with the bad sensor halter performance or damage anything until I do get another?
Thanks

even dangling it is still doing it's job.
all it is doing is reading air temperature. underhood temperature is close enough to intake air temp to not make a huge difference.

Wahwhawhaawhaaaat?
First of all, to say that under the hood temps is even close to intake temps (or what intake temps SHOULD be with the stock air box) is CRAZY unless you are using a short ram air intake. The difference should be great, as in 50-100 degrees F. This is exactly why short ram/cone air intakes are a bad idea. The hotter the intake temps, the more likely detonatation or at least a very lean/heat soaked condition will occur, hindering performance partly due to your KS overruling your timing. They sure do SOUND fast though!
The iat sensor has a lot to do with timing control, preventing knock/ping/detonation. If air temp decreases, the risk of detonation also decreases, and vice versa. Unless you have your IAT sensor "dangling" outside on your front bumper, you arent doing yourself any favors. The only reason you would hardly notice a difference between a good/bad/dangling/not dangling iat sensor (or actually think that it "doesnt doo crap") is because the KS will take over timing control if the IAT's are off to save your engine's ***. But youll be stuck with sub par timing resulting sub par performance, etc.
This brings up the debate of the ebay "chip". You trick your iat sensor into thinking temps are cooler than they are, this yields more timing, yielding MAYBE 1 or 2 or 3 hp. What youre ACTUALLY doing is decreasing your mpg and encouraging piston suicide on a real hot day. Youll notice the mpg loss before the extra few hp. The whole IAT topic is so ugly. I wish people would just leave them alone in their little hole.

You ACTUALLY believe that Nissan and every other car maker would spend the time money and resources to put a part on an engine that "doesn't doo anythiing"????????????????????????? You should have your posting privelages taken away for such an ignorant and misinformed statement. A lot of people come to this site for help, and what is being said is the opposite of help.

There is so much misinformation on this site it's starting to make me sick.

as far as underhood ~ intake temps, I had a caravan which had it's motor swapped. the original motor had an IAT, the swapped motor did not. we wire tied the IAT to the side of the intake plenum (we didn't do the original swap, we ended up doing a head job later on and found the IAT under the plenum). The car ran just fine that way.

you are correct that there is no sensor on the car that does nothing. Every one is there for a reason.

FWIW the entire internet is full of misinformation. at least here there is a chance of it being corrected.

I'm sure it seemingly ran fine, but that does'nt mean it ran right, or optimal.

no, but it will cause you to fail an emissions test/inspection.
The rear o2 (sensor2) are there to monitor how well your catalytic converter is doing.
