Noobie Brake Noise Problem Question! Help

Well in my last thread I explained the noise coming from my passenger side front end. It turned out being a wheel bearing so I got the bearing and seals replaced and the sounds caused by the bad bearing disappeared, but now I have a new problem!

When Im driving low speeds, and low rpms especially, I noticed there was a high pitched squeal, squeak noise coming from the same area that where I just replaced the wheel bearing. I recognized this noise as being a brake problem. A few hours ago I removed the wheel and took off the caliper. Nothing looked out of line, but I noticed that the fitting of the caliper to the pads was VERY tight. I had to use a mallet to remove the caliper and when I put it back on it was chipping the little metal things (not sure what they are called or what purpose they serve) on the back of the brake pads. I noticed that on the backside brake pads it had 2 of these metal things. One exactly like the front and a different shaped one over it. Thats when I got the idea to take off the different shaped one, so now the backside and frontside pad have the same metal things on them. I put the tire back on and tightened it up. Now the noise has been greatly reduced but you can still hear where something is rubbing but there is no squealy squeaky noise anymore. So my question to yall is, Is it ok to drive my car without this part on the brake pad?

Here is the part I removed:

And a picture of my max for the hell of it! Not the best picture

I really hate to say this but... yeh its ok. that is a anti-rattle shim.
one thing I noticed from you pics is the absence of PBC grease (or any anti-squeal lube) . you want to apply it anywhere metal touches metal to prevent brake noises(such as squealing)

I would try getting some lube on there and putting it all back together and see if the noise is gone. I would bet it will be.
hope this helps

Thanks for the advice. Im guessing I could pick up some anti-squeal lube at the auto parts store? And where exactly would I apply the lube? Like on the between the calipers and shims? Excuse my nubiness!

you can pick it up at any parts store, make sure you DONT get the stuff that you put on the pads.autozone sells it in little one time use packages for like a buck.
you want to apply it where ever metal touches metal...
for example: between the pad and the shim , where the shim (or pad) touches the caliper ,and on the "end" of the pads where they slide in the caliper bracket.
just kinda take a minute and look where ever metal touches ,thats where you want the lube ok.
NOTE: DO NOT put any on the pad material ok! thats not what this stuff is for.

oh yeh. on one end of the pad(at least one on each side of the car) there should be a little metal tab sticking out...this is the wear indicator. when the pad gets worn down this tab is supposed to start rubbing on the rotor and making an annoying "Squealing" sound to prompt you to have your brakes looked at, make sure this is not bent over and hitting the rotor. if it is just bend it back so that it will be at a level where the pad is getting thin.

hope this makes since to you...by the questions you ask ,you will get it no problem.

you should inspect your brakes. what you are describing is the sound of the wear indicator rubbing the rotor.
