Clutch Advice

I got my 99 SE with 65k miles on it stock and original clutch. When it was new to me I could spin (churp) the tires into 2nd and even 3rd gear with a hard shift. Now 2 years and 15k later I have a full exhaust, y-pipe b-pipe rear section and with them some more power verified by the butt dyno. The car can no longer spin 2nd gear and it sometimes slips. It is also strange that if I just have the smallest amount of pressure on the pedal the clutch will slip.

3 questions

1. Is the small amount of power too much for the stock clutch I've heard rumors the Altima and the Maxima share the same clutch and that clutch isn't really big enough for the Maxima

2. Could something be out of adjustment with the clutch pedal causing a small amount of pressure to cause the clutch to slip.

3. Could it just be time for a new clutch at 81k

only cable driven clutches can be adjusted, most cars nowadays are hydralic like our max's. so no adjusting.

A trick i heard one of my friend told me was trying to take off from 4th gear by just dropping it. if your engine doesn't stall and slips, time for a new clutch

It all depends on how it was driven. for example I had a 94 taurus SHO that was taken car off first ower didnt slip clutch rev matched both up and down. when starting off only reved it max of 1300 rpm sometimes less. sold it to me did the same thing next 100k. at 170k the clutch was still strong as ever the day before I got rear ended it chirped 2nd and 3rd. This is a car with 220hp stock on a notoriously week clutch some people reported 40k replacing it most replaced it at 80k.

Now my current car 94 honda Accord they are supposed to have strong clutches that last 200k well i got the car with 100k on it the clutch felt weird then . I have put 24 k on it and its getting pretty bad. Its all in how its treated.

I dont know about maxima clutch petal but my accord engaged real high. if i would rest my foot on the petal it would slip. BUt i adjusted the rod from the clutch master cylinder to the petal. it now bites around half where it should.

If you rip it apart it will start to slip. In addition, if like me you've picked up some wider, stickier tires since you got your max it will be tougher to chirp gears. I can on occasion chirp second but that is a seldom occurrence at this point.

Tough clutches shatter trannies. Keep that in mind.

No offense, but it sounds to me that the way you've been driving it (`hard shifting' any old car has to be tough on it) you're lucky the original clutch has lasted THIS long.

check the plunger motion on the slave clutch cylinder. It should fully retract when clutch is released.

contrary to what some ill-informed poster said earlier, our clutch can certainly be adjusted. there is an adjustment nut connected to the pedal under the dash. i'd suggest trying to adjust the clutch first. that could very well be your problem, or it might just be that you clutch is too worn. in good condition though, a stock 4th gen clutch has PLENTY of torque capacity for the mods you have.

I am running into the SAME exact issue you are. With the exception that my clutch is factory and I know it needs to be replaced... I press my clutch like an inch and it slips. I feel like it could be slipping even fully engaged when I am really on it. I feel like my car has gotten slower and TQ sucks. and I also can't chirp anymore =[

Are incorrect sir, the clutch can be adjusted. The freeplay adjusts and can determine how much pressure the clutch is going together. To test this theory. I adjusted it to the worst I could and the car was practically un drivable. I had to floor it to get to 30mph... lol

basically the pedal push rod was so far out in the MC that the clutch could not fully engage.

yah, same here, I got stickier tires and ever sine then it has been a challenge to chirp. I got a tiny tiny chirp not to long ago, IT is in one of my videos. It is hard to hear though. lol I have gotten to the point when I shift into 2nd I just dump the clutch and my car just pushes upward but does not chirp...

I agree!
For my first car, when i rebuild the engine, I wanted to change the clutch also but it turned out that it was just as thick as the replacement part - my father had been driving it for most of its miles so ... most of it is up to the way it has been used!
