Weird Alarm Problem

Lately my locks have been locking themselves. It even happened with the keys in the ignition, the car running, and me outside the car. Luckily I had the windows down so I could reach in and unlock it (although I was at home where I had a spare key anyway). This is becoming annoying, though, and I worry I'm going to end up locked out of my car one of these days.

Before anyone asks, I said it was in the ignition with me outside the car, so obviously it's not me accidentally pressing buttons on the fob. It has happened in other instances but this is when it happens most frequently (with the car running). I am not bumping the door lock button, either, because I was driving along the other day with a buddy in the passenger seat ironically enough explaining this issue to him when we both hear the doors lock and my hands are nowhere near the keys or the door switches.

Anyone have any clue what could be causing this? Faulty relay or something?

Nope, factory alarm. What is so puzzling is that it only started doing it in the last 2 weeks. It's never done it in the 3 years I've owned the car.

mine does that too, I haven't gotten around to deprogramming that "feature" yet.

to the OP - I would check all the power lock switches for corrosion.

Or perhaps a loose plug? I also noticed lately that the screws that hold in the door handle trim piece have worked themselves loose due to vibration from the speakers (stock speakers no less), I wonder if the same could be happening to other things on the door.

could be, but highly unlikely. the connectors lock into place.
and your speakers still rattle the doors?
mine had no surround left on them (front or rear) when i got the car. They have now been replaced but the car doesn't run right so it's parked until I get un-lazy

Could be the body control module or the multi remote module. Intermittent problems like this can be hard to fix. You can disconnet the connector to the multi remote module to disable it temporarily and see if that helps. It's located in the trunk. You can also try reprogramming the remote. These may be long shot but easy to do and may help to isolate the cause of the problem.

or maybe the actual remote has a faulty button that the lock button is a little touchy or jammed and sometimes send the signal. like when you press the tv remote control and the button gets stuck? do ya understand me? i hope ya do. sometimes i only make sense to myself...

All of this stuff makes perfect logical sense to me. I'll start troubleshooting this weekend if I am not too lazy or working on the Talon.

My guess would be something wrong with your fob. Maybe take the battery out and not use it for a while (just use your key) and see if it happens again.

IIRC the fob wont lock the car if the keys are in the ignition.....My guess would be that one of the wires controlling the lock features are shorting or touching somehow.....Also could be that the ignition key sensing has gone bad and is forcing the locks to lock............

I think you might be wrong on that one... I'm going to test it out real fast.

At least in my car (5th gen though) the fob worked when the engine was on. Just tested it.

I don't think it's the "ignition sensing" because it has done it without the keys in the ignition. Like earlier tonight: I unlocked my doors to get in, and as soon as I pulled the door open the doors locked on their own.

if the 4th gen has a central locking system then it may be the actuator or the sensor on it that is having issues. I've seen it once or twice on the third gen.

I get the same weird locking stuff sometimes. I think it could be the FOB but I'm not positive. I can remember it happening a long time ago too, its almost like...if I close the doors too hard or something it locks. I dont know how to explain it. Sometimes I hit the unlock button twice on my FOB and itll unlock and then relock before i can get the door open.

Are the doors supposed to lock when you start the car? Cause mine have never done that consistently or often.

I have a similar problem but the catch is I have a Viper Alarm system. I would get into the car and close the door and the doors would lock. or in some cases I would open drivers side door and same thing, the other doors would lock. Weird...

It sounds like everyone's problems have to do with the exterior lock/key cylinder. Either the drivers or passenger one. Especially if you never use the key to unlock your doors. Try using your key in the lock to work in loose and see if it help or just take the door panel off and undo the electrical connector. If you undo the electrical connector you won't be able to disarm the alarm with they key and the key will only lock and unlock that door.

Very good point fanaticrockford! I never thought about it but it's true, I NEVER use my key to unlock anything but my trunk and even then it's like once a month.

I had the battery disconnected totally for a few hours yesterday when uninstalling my VAFC and that didn't help. That was BEFORE the door-closing incident last night.

This is just annoying, really. Not a "problem" per se.
