My newly rebuild tranny blows a hole in itself...

ok..so I just had my tranny rebuilt last month...and on friday I had just left work...turned left at a stoplight...took first to 2500 rpms...second to 2500....into third...and then another light ahead of me turned red...so I push the clutch in and go to take the car out of third....and it WON'T COME OUT!!! so I pull a little harder...and BOOM...all hell breaks loose!!! I can only get in and out of third gear now...all other gears locked out...and I start to smell gear lube (bad thing) I'm trying to find a place to stop and I hear parts acutally falling out of my car and bouncing on the road!!!!! I finally get stopped..and luckely my buddy in his new M-coupe was behind me dodging tranny parts. when I got out of the car and looked under it....gear lube is POURING out of my tranny case..and there is a hole the size of a quarter in it!! My god...what the heck happened??? They must have made a MAJOR mistake rebuilding it or something.

I AM ****ED AT THE TRANNY PLACE.....I even got a good recommendation to them from a friend. oh well...It's getting replaced under their warrenty....so I guess I can't complain...I just hope the gear lube didn't get into the clutch housing..and I need a new clutch...beucause they will probably try to replace my beautiful ACT clutch with a crappy stock unit!!!!

everyone is trying to blame it on my NOS (50 shot) that's really hard to believe since I only used it ONCE in the last month after the tranny was re-built...and got it in July.....NO ONE else on these boards with NOS has blown their 5-speed.....why should I be an exception when I'm only running a little 50 shot

don't worry...I'm not jinxing you...

I just don't see any conceivable way that a little 50-shot will instantly blow a manual gearbox..it just isn't possible....

Do you have a Short shifter? After experiencing a few of them, I've felt that while they make your throws shorter, gear engagement is more abrupt and not as intuitive, so you would have a tendency to force the gear changes more agressively. So that poor synchro inside your tranny may be taking a bit more abuse. Even without a short shifter, shifting into 3rd under hard acceleration is a bit of a challenge.

Bummer dude. I'm glad it's under warranty. Make sure the tranny shop doesn't try to say the same about the NOS. Unless they said up front that they will not warranty the rebuild because of the NOS and you agreed to it, they have to repair it. Try to be there when they button it up to make sure they put in the good clutch. Especially if oil got on the current one and they replace it too. They have to replace it with the same one. Good luck and I hope it works out.

No...no short shifter YET...it's actually sitting in it's box right now waiting to be installed. I don't think the failure had anything to do with worn or poor synchros...the tran had just been rebuild, and all the synchros were brand new. Plus this failure did NOT happen under full throttle acceleration...I had just left work...and was driving very mildly..didn't even go over 3000 rpms...plus it happend when I tried to take it OUT of gear...not put it in gear...

Oh. OK. Must be the re-build then. Had that happen on my old Honda. They replaced the 3rd gear synchro and I could not get into 5th gear at all after they re-built it. 5th worked fine before they did their job. Oh well.

is there Any manual VQ owners with over 100k miles and good trannies?

Looks like Nissan can't get it right. 3rd gens blow their auto trannies, 4th gens their manual trannies. WTF
One of the reasons I was considering a 5 speed is that it is SUPPOSED to be better for hard driving, or more durable then an auto.. Even if it's not hard driving, I still figured I'd wear out the clutch not the whole tranny. I rather replace the cluch for 300$ then a tranny rebuilt which cost me 1,200$.

Are there any 5 speeders with over 100K miles?? Me! I'm sure there's a whole bunch of others, too.

115K miles on my original clutch on my 98SE. It's had mods since about 50K miles, too.

yea..there are plenty of them....remember...my tranny didn't fail becuase nissan designed it bad...a nissan tech screwed it up a few months ago...it was NOT a failure due to hard driving or mods...

That's why I've completely given up o dealerships. The so-called expertise that they may have because they only work on their vehicles just isn't there. I have a local mechanic that I trust, and if I have to goto the dealer, for a check engine light or something, I document everything befor ei head in. Always a stressful affair for me.

Re: DW ??

I drive it fast alot, and hard every so often. Depending on how free I feel on the highway, I happily cruise at 100 mph. Otherwise 80. I don't do rabbit starts often, usually engage 1st and then floor it. Occaisionally I get bouts of extreme speed, take it up to 140, or put away a challenge like a CL-S or something To make the 115K I didn't really baby it, I like to enjoy my ride, excuse the pun!
