not sure about this but i think they just pay for whatever recipets/invoices you show them as proof of the money you had to spend because of said incident.

they pay you but only after you show proof that you've had the work done.

My wife owns an insurance company. They send the adjustor out to look at the car and he does a detailed investigation. The insurance company will then give you a check for what he says the damage is worth. Some adjustors are asses and some are just idiots.

+1 and then if a shop charges more than the adjuster decided, you can show the reciept to the insurance company and they will give you up to what the shop charged.

best way to find out is to call state farm and ask, good luck. most of the time they will cut you a check and you'll figure out where you want to get your car fixed, based on the appraisal.

In NYC people call the insurance themselfs and have the other party insurance come to your work or home. They will then give you a estimate and that the amount you will get. If you feel like the amount is low on the estimate then call the insurance back and tell them you need a adjustment. You dont need to bring it to a shop , if the shop calls for you they will get the check. I use to work in a bodyshop so i would know. CALL THEM YOURSELF !!! Mike

no, if you want to just collect the check and repair it yourself, don't go to any shops at all. Do exactly what nyc96max said. Contact state farm, and their adjuster will come to your house and look at the car. Then, they'll offer you a settlement of $X. If you like the offer, you can take it. If you feel that you should get more, you can try to negotiate with them. A lot of times, people say never take the first offer you are given. I took it, simply because the entire process took so long and I was just anxious to get my car fixed and back on the road. Good luck. Oh by the way, I hope you got a police report!
