Rear Ended Today

Hey. I was rear ended today in stop and go traffic on the interstate. I merged into the right lane and the guy driving the 18 wheeler wasn't paying attention so he hit me going ~10mph, I was stopped. Anyways, it took an hour for the cop to show up. Everyone was ok, I was the only person in my car. The rear bumper, trunk, and spoiler are not repairable. The trunk won't open and the spoilers brackets all broke off. There is also damage to the right rear quarter panel where the spoiler overlaps it. The car is drive able; not sure if the frame was damaged. I was guesstimating ~$2000 worth of damage. It's 1996 SE 5-speed. Do you think they will total it? I'm not sure what I will get if this is the case.

Thanks,
Mooney

I will assume It being totaled,If the car was hit in the frame and where the fuel tank sits or where the spare sits then thats totaled because the car was hit to far inward to pull back out or It's able to be pulled out but It will be a weak structure. I would like to see some pics and as always the insurance will try to judge this. Good luck

It all depends on what the insurance adjuster says. It may be "fixable" but you may also be one of the unfourtunate people who drives down the road and anyone behind you can tell, the car has been nailed (ever see a car look good, but drive sideways?). If they do total it ... part it out. (or sell it too Fanatickrockford )

Thanks. So defiantly demod it? The trunk won't even budge open. I'm at college now but will be home next weekend. I could demod it then. I guess I can change the D2sand MEVI out. I don't have a stock intake or radio though. Anybody with experiences like this please chime in. If it is totaled how long do I have before they come and get it once the deem it totaled?

Mooney

Edit: Will get pictures up tomorrow.

look under the car at the frame, if the body panels are just damaged it can be fixed by a professional.

The frame doesn't look bent to the naked eye. I will take it to a body shop Tuesday to see what they think about it.

Seeing that the 1/4 panel is crumpled, I would consider the car totalled. Just fixing the 1/4 and getting a new trunk and bumper with paint alone would run you 2500-3000 at a decent shop.

So do they give kbb value? How much do you think I will get? KBB for excellent is $5,165. KBB URL. This really bums me out. I was looking forward to keeping this car until I finish college.

you get what is called ACV (actual Cash Value) or loan value. if the damage is over 70% of that value then they consider it a total.
since you were rearended you should go after the trucks insurance company and leave yours out of it for now.

That's my plan. Except the cop gave me forms that I have to turn into my insurance agency within 30 days or they suspend my license. The first thing I am doing Monday morning is calling the company.

On top of this, I lost my 3.5mm to RCA adapter.

Def more the 2k in damages. In my state that would be like 5-6k in damages. I got a little fender bender which they just needed the fender to be painted and Dented out and they quoted my $1300 bucks. So I am pretty sure a completly crushed trunk and bumper will be more then 2k. Consider ur car totaled man.

i had a similar accident and got it totalled... the reason is that the rear quarter panel is connected to the rest of the body (on the roof)... this is a HUGE part and you could cut it and fix it or replace the whole part but that is way more than the car is worth... my opinion? De-mod now and calculate the money you are gonna have to get a new car + your estimate and start looking... for another maxima

Saturday will be my demodding day. How much do you think I will get total? A guesstimate would be fine. How much do you think they will sell the car back to me for? I found an auto, thought I could swap the tranny.

Thanks,
Mooney

so you cut off a truck in a stop and go traffic and now you're trying to get top money for your POS car? Good luck with that.

I hate when people cut off a 40ton truck and blame the truck driver for not stopping sooner.

How do I cut off someone if there is more than enough time for them to stop? I wouldn't of even gotten in front of him if I didn't know that. So it's my fault he wasn't paying attention and hit me? You think I like what happened? If you want to be a jackass, go do it in someone elses thread.

He was going 10mph when he hit me. I was stopped right behind the car in front of me. If I wasn't there the guy in front of me would have been hit.

If the trunk is not pushed in to hard and It's not Into the spare tire area and It should be ok as It looks like It Is. I would look into the main frame area if it was twisted or twicked a bit. Let us know what happends.

Seriously dude, if a truck company hit you...your golden....tell your insruance company how ever buy any means go strait towards the truck company! they got insurance for everything. Its not your fault you shouldn't have to pay a dime..you should get re-emberssed for time off, money out of your pocket...you should be in a rental right now. and by all means demod. take the radio out before the claims people come and look. the mebi might be a little bit harder. but your lucky getting hit buy a company vehicle.
Look up some of my posts...i went through a accident my insruance company didn't even know. and i made a crap load cause the dude was drunk. it was a hassle, but it worked out. keep good records of everything. time, pics of the car before and after the crash. thankfully i had pics before that day...that proved very beneficial.
advice...
BE FIRM!
its your car...it is now your hassle, you didn't cause this. thus THEY pay for it.

*exactly* what I was thinking.

Did the police issue the truck driver a ticket? If so then it absolutely doesn't matter what those other posters said - it was that dude's fault. End of story.
