Need new front brakes - Suggest budget rotor and pads

Looking to change my front breaks because they feel spongy and require me to slam on them sometimes just to stop, im guessing the pads are out the door.

Anyways, its a 160k mile car and i just need some basic/but good rotors and pads that wont break the bank.

Any suggestions? Does Kragen, pepboys or Autozone have anything worthwhile?

I got brembo blank OEM rotors off TireRack awhile back... they've been working great with akebono OEM pads.

yeah, raybestos isn't bad but I think they tend to squeak/dust more than other OEM pads.

Recommend looking in the GD section. I am on RTP blanks and Axxis ultimates. Damn it stops hard. If you cant get the axxis ultimates, then step down a notch to save a bit.

Brembo blanks: http://www.internetautosupply.com/ca..._63_64_65_1584
Pads are a matter of personal preference and how you drive.

Your brakes could be spongy for several reasons:
- worn out master cylinder
- tired OEM brake lines
- brake fluid that's really old
- brake pads that are crap

Or a combination of all of the above. I redid all of these things this summer using Napa rotors, EBC Redstuff pads, Nissan brake lines, and ATE Superblue brake fluid. The result is solid, safe brakes that won't fade under any circumstances short of a closed circuit.

I think you should consider strongly replacing the master cylinder and brake lines for safety reasons. Rotors are the one item I'd skip if I were on a budget. I don't know what pads to use from the parts stores because I've never found a brake pad available there that was better than crap.

Probably Nissan. (Non- Key Value line)

Pretty much any pad that dusts less is crap, and any pad that performs the same or better will dust a lot more.

it is not that simple of an equation.

dust is a by product of semi-metallic pads which stop better than other types of pads.

yea my problem is I can press on the brake pedal a good amount before it actually starts to break. Feels like my pedal is on a sponge, and i really have to get down to smashing it 75% to gets the brake to start working. Also, when i brake hard, my car seems to turn a little to the right, like if the right side isnt braking as much as the left.

When was the last time a brake flush was performed? I'd recommend to start there first. Also inspect all of your calipers for a seized one.

Does anybody have an opinion about basic, cheap NAPA brand front brake pads? I have been using them for the last 2 years or so and I seem to be going through them very quickly.

Pads with higher-than-stock torque (grip) and high temperature capabilities usually produce significant dust. Some produce dust with iron compounds in them (Hawks) that will stick to and corrode things.

It's entirely possible that is happening.

I forgot to say that in my mega-brake-job I also replaced a caliper and rebuilt a couple others.
