a/c compressor replacement question

I need to replace my ac compressor. I actually just need to replace the pulley but i can't get it off so im gonna change out the whole compressor. Does anyone know if they are all universal 97~01 ? I have a 97 nissan maxima. I think the 95-96 compressors are different and 97 to 01 are all unviersal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They are not all the same. Later 4th gens don't cycle, the system pressure is regulated internally. You need the correct compressor for your application.

why in God's name would you replace an entire compressor for the sake of a bad pulley?

if i'm not mistaken a new pulley assembly is like $80 whereas a compressor is anywhere from $300 to $500.

a compressor clutch holding tool is like $19. a pulley puller is about $23. and snap ring tool kit is around $19. all of these tools can be loaned from an auto parts store.

a new pulley bearing (if that's what's gone bad) is about $30 to $35 and a machine shop will charge you maybe $20 to press out the old and press in the new.

pull the pulley and replace it.

Plus, if you're going to pull the compressor, you're gonna have to take the car somewhere to have the refrigerant discharged , then recharged after the swap...not cheap.

how are you trying to remove the pulley?

bare hands, vice grips, a pickle fork, c-clamps and a hammer ain't gonna work.

even with the right tools, if you can't get it off, go and have the system evacuated, remove the compressor and take the whole thing to a machine shop. they'll be able to remove the pulley... there again you'll have saved anywhere from $250 to $450.

but hey, if you just like buying and installing new parts for sake of buying and installing new parts, have at it.
