where to get 5 speed syncros

Anyone know where i can get some syncros for a 5-speed? I know of GTtransmissions but just wondering if anyone knows of another company that sells them as well.

I'm open to hear as well ... lol Only place I know of or trust (becasue I've done business with them) is GtTrans .... I welcome others to post as well, if anyone knows of another dealer.

Cheers!

haha, ok, well just the local dealership i guess? gt wants about 323 for the full rebuilt kit that includes syncros, and 207 without syncros.

That's what I told you it'd be (w/o syncroz) ... pretty close anyway.

anyone have prices straight from nissan? and how hard the synchros to install? Its just a matter of pressing them on, right? I probably wont ever get around to it but I'm curious anyway.

This may be a complete newb question, so sorry if it is, but do these transmissions have shift forks/rods? I know I need to rebuild mine as the input shaft bearing is on its way out and when I do rebuild it, I'm going to get the whole kit with synchro's too. My reason for asking about the forks/rods is because I know it doesn't shift as smoothly as its supposed to. I've driven a few Honda's and Acura's and even a Mustang that shifts like butter and I cry when I get back to mine.

yes they do have shift forks. If you get the FSM you can find pretty much everything you want to know. When I was rebuilding mine I made the mistake of mixing old races with new bearings and forced alot of things together which may or may not be the cause of my notchy shifting. My point is, I know what you mean ...I am hoping maybe a short shifter will get rid of the notchy-ness (being longer than the cut stock shifter I have now).

I just hadnt looked at the FSM yet. duh. Does GT sell the forks? or are they not even worth replacing?

i dont think so, if they did they'd probably just come from nissan like the synchros apparently do.

Usually the shift forks have very little wear. I would not plan to replace them. The rods are also usually in excellent condition. In fact, synchros are usually just fine.

IMHO the biggest issues with shifter feel are the shifter bushing, cleanliness of the tranny internals, and condition of the shift teeth. Put in a good 75w-90 GL-4 oil, don't mash it into gear, and drive it for what it is. Some are better than others, but let's face it - these are not BMW transmissions here.

For those looking to rebuild your own, do not do a thing without the FSM and plans to reshim the differential bearings.

As far as the shifter bushing do you think it is weak? or just the design is poor? I used to have a poly filled one but I destroyed it in removal and just replaced with brand new stock. I couldnt necessarily tell the difference. Also, geesa, how do you feel about royal purple tranny fluid? Thats what I've currently got in there because I was afraid if I developed another leak I didnt want to have problems sourcing bottles for refill. (royal purple is at every auto store around here unlike redline).
anyway, I'm going to try topping it off because it may be a tad low.

David Canitz (head engineer at RP) has assured me that their GL-5/GL-4 gear oils are perfectly safe for yellow metals. So really the only difference might be slightly different shift feel with the RP.

I think the stock shifter bushing is perfectly fine, as long as it's in good condition. Most original stock bushings aren't in great condition.

I still run GL-4 in my trans and since that is what Nissan calls for, I will stick with it.

As for the shift forks / rods ... yea like Dave said, they usually are in good shape. As for the synconizers .... not as simple as just snapping them on. lol Nice try. You have to dismantle the IPS and MS (and you better have your tiny clip plyers handy!) and remove the gears to get to the syncroz. Most of the time they aren't in too bad of shape. If you grind (even with the clutch in) when shifting, or you pop out of gear (not only syncro problem, but probably a bent shift rod) then replace them. It's a big job as it is, and to do syncroz just to do them is senseless work. The shifter bushing (as mentioned) is likely the cause of notchy, sloppy shifting. Much easier to replace the shifter bushing than to do syncroz. Something to consider ...

Thanks a lot. I'll keep all this in mind and look into the bushing. I just know a friend of mine, his Mustang had bent rods, and mine is kinda acting the same way, but at least I can find my gears each shift. That thing you could never tell because the rods were bent. Just didnt know if that was my issue.

Might not relate to you but if its a "feeling" in the shifter itself, try a new return spring. This can make you shifts feel "tighter".

I just got back from driving it. I only have been driving it on weekends with another car group I found locally. It wasnt as bad as I remembered it. Tonite at least it only felt notchy. Probably replacing that bushing will do the trick. Still have to rebuild it tho. IPS bearing is goin. Makes me feel better that its not the rods or synchro's.

Yea, a bent rod will not allow you to engage gear, or hang you in a gear. Vil is right ... the return spring can make shifts tighter feeling, but it will probably still be notchy.

As for your failing IPS bearing ... lol, who's isn't at some point? Mine doesn't talk to me anymore (for now) so I guess I can consider myself one of the lucky few.

ok, well i still havent received the parts from gt transmissions and so i called em a week after i ordered the parts and they claimed that the parts just shipped this morning. this pisses me off to no other because they told me the parts were going to be shipped last THURSDAY, today is the following friday and they finally shipped. i was told that i SHOULD have the parts by tuesday, while this whole time my car has been sitting, torn apart in my garage. i have no car, no parts, and im supposed to race it in 10 days. this is the ****in bull**** that i hate dealing with. their excuse was that they were short staffed, and they guy in charge of orders was out of the shop all week. Well, when i ordered LAST week the parts were supposed to go out that afternoon, in theory, dont count on the company getting you parts in a timely manner.

Yeah they sent me the wrong kit at first so I had to wait for the second one to come...I feel your pain. The people were nice though. It sounds like a mom and pop shop, an older couple.
Accountability is a problem I think in almost every business I've dealt with though..its irritating but I've just lowered my standards.

if all you ordered is bearings, I found bearings at a local bearing supplier when I screwed one of mine up from the kit. But your on your own with all the seals and stuff, better check the dealership, its going to add up to be more.

yep, i got the full kit with all syncros and bearings. im actually having a local shop tear down the shafts and put it all back together with the new bearings and syncros for a quoted price of 60 bux. makes it alot easier than having to cut off bearings and wut not, dont think i would be able to do all bearings and syncros myself with no major equipment like a press
