Horrendous sounds turned out to be just belts

My Max started making a squeak-squeak-squeak sound, related to engine speed. It seemed to be coming from the timing chain area so I expected the worst.
After a week it suddenly turned into a really loud 'choff-choff-choff' noise a bit like a blown exhaust manifold, together with a metal-to-metal rubbing sound.
This really freaked me out. I put the car up on the hydraulic jack and took a look underneath but all I could see was that the steering pump belt was missing a few bits here and there.

So I took the car to my favourite mech just up the road, expecting to hear some horror story the following day.
Next afternoon I called him and he told me he'd replaced both the steering pump belt and the main serpentine belt, and the car was fine! I took a look at the old belts and they didn't even seem that bad. I'm really surprised to find that old belts can cause that sort of noise.

I paid 800 pesos, that's roughly 80 dollars including labour.
At the same time they found the CV boot had split, so they cleaned out the joint, repacked it and put a new boot on. That was an extra 50 bucks.

those belts are hard to get to number 1, and number 2 i wouldnt have the slightest idea where to start with that. i worked on my first 3 or 4 cars and they were american cars, much easier to work with. and number 3, i have no tools for this car, they were stolen years ago and i don't like wasting my time when i have a reliable tech to do the work. yes, it would be nice to do it myself, but alas, im not a mechanic, just a humble buisness owner. and, saving money is nice, but when you f it up, there's no warranty on anything, nuff said......
