No crank after heat soak

I am having a consistent no-crank problem with my 97 i30 (auto) after it has been driven long enough to heat up the engine bay beyond just the coolant reaching normal temperature. (It does not overheat.)

When this happens it simply will not crank. All lights on dash come on as usual, but do not dim when key turned to crank position. There are no sounds when the key is turned from 'on' to crank position.

All other sounds when the key is first turned to 'on' position are normal.

If I leave it for at least an hour it will crank normally again - full speed crank, no unusual sounds.

Battery is strong and only a few months old.

I suspected the range sensor (neutral switch) so I replaced that with a new Nissan Genuine part but the problem continues unchanged.

No MIL codes have popped up.

Any advice on where to look next? TIA.

Thanks, njmaxseltd.

The starter can stop working only when hot? What part of the starter would fail to cause that? Since there is no current draw in the crank position my first thoughts were a switch/relay type problem.
