Bose is dead. Fix it or replace it?

Ok Ive finally been hit with the Bose death. My question is: should I have it fixed OR should I get an aftermarket head unit? Also I found a link that has instructions on how to fix it although you do have to pay for the instructions. Has anyone seen or heard about this? If so is it hard to do? Thanks in advance fellas.

What's wrong with it? Symptoms?
A link that has instructions on how to fix it, without knowing what the he11 is wrong sounds scary to me. Check ebay for used replacement units that are fairly cheap. A simple swap for a working unit is much easier and cheaper then chaning the whole system. Also check online for shops that offer a radio repair for a fixed cost. I got the unit in my Explorer repaired for $70 bucks, lifetime warranty came with the repair as well.

which year headunit is it? if its the 95-96, its pretty easy to fix assuming its just the no display or cderr message. all you need is a soldering iron. if u dont wanna go through the trouble of fixing it, ill take it off your hands, lol.

Aftermarket HU's are so affordable these days with decent features that I would not contemplate paying any money to fix it...or even buy a used Bose for that matter.

But that's just me.

Just did the aftermarket HU in my maxima. Very affordable, all the features I wanted (single CD, Cassette, MP3 jack, Green lights). They even installed it all for under $250 dollars. I had trouble playing burnt CD's in my Bose, but not any more. The stero I had installed was a JVC KW-XC410. I've had no regrets.

theres two particular resistors that you have to resolder, very easy, once u get to them it literally takes all of two minutes to just resolder them, even if u dont know how to solder. theres a write up somewhere that shows a pic of the two resistors....ill try to find it

It would be cheaper to buy a new headunit, dash kit, and wiring harness then to buy a new OEM deck.

My display was off for the whole summer, but came back about two weeks ago. Wondering whether it is whether related. I will try your fix if it went off again.

Depending on what part needs replacing finding new parts for the headunit will be difficult. I drove around for 3 months without a freaking radio because they shop I took it to couldn't find the part that they needed. I finally took matters into my own hands, called the clarion parts distributor and posed as one of their employees and FINALLY got the part number for the cd mechinism. I should of taken it into my own hands sooner. The shop didn't charge me because it took so long.

you should get a transfer here in j.c. nj firefighters top off At over 95,000 after just 7 years. that doesn't even include promtions. then you can get any system you want.

x2, the newer HUs found in the 97-99 cars seems more reliable. FWIW its what I did when the HU in my 95 broke. It seems the unit that came in the 95-96 has a lifespan of about 11 years because both mine and one in a friend's 95 broke afer that many years. One plus of the OEM head unit is that crackheads are less likely to smash your windows and steal your head unit.

I'd like to see photos of the various aftermarket/upgraded units that everyone's installing.

I'm totally **** about things fitting and being finished off like they were meant to be there.

I'm not into "rigged" bezels and empty compartments and all...

check out the avn6620 thread. you will see a pic of my head unit that I custom modified the stock radio bracket to make the head unit sit flush with the dash. Well not really custom all I did was drill back from where the stock screws where.

avn6620 is a headunit made by Eclispe ..its a all in 1 unit meaning navi, dvd , cd, ipod compatible, serius and xm compatible. Regarded by many as one of the best headunits out there. Do a search on it.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to take the time to fix the bose hu, you should definately go with something else. There are so many hu's out there that you can get for cheap and install yourself. Don't you want to be able to play MP3's and maybe have satellite radio? For under 200 bucks I bought and installed myself a JVC KD G-820 that can change it's display to any color in the rainbow, play burned DVD with like a million songs, play a USB memory stick with WMA's and also has sirius. Bose sucks anyways.

Uh...I took the time. It didn't take much at all. The display went out, opened it up, had to order a surface mount resistor and soldier it on to the "problem" board. Put it back together, and it's perfect. More info in that tutorial I think was posted up at the top of this thread.

I had a 94 max that had the Bose hu die in it. The 94 hu was the same one used in the 95s & 96s. I put a hu from a 97 in it and the cd player would skip when I hit bumps, where the original 94 hu never skipped. I remember reading threads of other org'ers that had the same cd skipping with a 97 hu.

Would you mind sharing with us the type of adapters used with this unit to connect to the BOSE factory speakers. Also, can you post a picture of this unit installed in your car. I like to see how it looks.

a 94 maxima does not take the same H/U as 95 or newer. they have different connectors on the back.
