I want to replace my starter. Every online store I go to, show a 10 tooth starter for my vehicle. The Nissan dealer is giving me part # 233002y900r which shows up as an 11 tooth starter based on a web search on here. The '00 and '01 Maxima's have the same part number above. Putting in '00 or '01 for the model year is giving me an 11 tooth starter.

Why are all catalog's showing a 10 tooth starter for my vehicle?

 

the 10 tooth ones from autozone or other crappy stores are junk.. they are loud and cause the engine to turn slightly slower.. get the 11 tooth one

My starter has been dying slowly. It is now not starting at all. Just one click and that's it. The battery checks out ok, as lights do not dim, all the lights work, headlights work and the battery was replaced 4 years ago.

Were our cars originally equipped with a 10 tooth and later on Nissan decided to do a bulletin and recommend 11 tooth starters as replacements?

I have a re-manufactured Beck Arnley 11 tooth sitting to be installed tomorrow that I bought from Advance Auto Parts. Hopefully this one is better than the lifetime AutoZone starter's a lot of people are having trouble with.

 

well you can take apart the starter and see what is going on with it... what i have done in the past is to swapp the brushes and rotor out and call it a day...

install the one u bought and see how u like it.. iv seen a couple of units from autozone that are EXTREMELY LOUD when they crank...

 

How much did the brushes and rotor run you together? For me, it may not even be worth the hassle since I paid about $80 for it after a nice discount. It looks to be a re-manufactured Hitachi. Hopefully Beck Arnley did a good job with the re-build. They usually carry quality parts.

heres the thing.. you CAN get the brushes but im not sure from where...... they shouldn't cost that much.

 

Have you ever tired clenaing and re-greasin the starter. Not sure if it will definately fix the problem, but i think its worth a try, and if not then go ahead for the brand new stuff. I did this about 2 mnths ago and i think it was worth it.

 

I have not tried either Snypa. I have heard that this is a temporary fix, so I'd rather get a new one and be done with it.

 

Brushes can be purchased from any alty. rebuilder. Search the internet for one close to you. Should be easy to find, might be listed in the yellow pages as well.

The job is DIY and is fairly straight forward.

You might even find the brushes on ebay....

 

As time went on Nissan put starters with more and more teeth into the maxima. Early 4th gens had an 8 tooth starter, then nissan changed to a 10 tooth starter, then to an 11 tooth starter. they did this to prolong starter life - more teeth = more mechanical advantage to the starter gear which means less strain on the starter motor (but slower turning over of the engine). I have an 11 tooth starter in my 95 maxima which replaced the 10 tooth starter that was in it before (which obviously wasn't the original starter because they came with 8 tooth starters back in 95).

IMO, it doesn't matter if it has 10 or 11 teeth. Just get a good one with the best warranty possible.

 

I had one from a standard 95 i own and one from a 95 auto i also own...2 of the bendix gears are different?? i don't think they have been replaced. Is the 5 speed one supposed to be shorter, cause it won't engage the flywheel in the auto...just a loud wizzing sound from the starter kicking out and not gripping in

You need to look up a stater for a '00-'03 Maxima or one for a '00-'04 I35. In all the catalog's they list the 11 tooth starter. If you put in a '95-'99 Maxima, all the catalog's will point you towards a 10 tooth.

so you guys are saying it is better to get a starter for a 00-03 maxima vs one for a 95-99? i have a 95 maxima and having issues with my starter not turning. over fast enough and scraping when i turn the key at times, or all the time. so a 00-03 starter will fit without any issues???

 

Your starter is on its way out. Buy a new one (re-manufactured) from any major Auto Parts store that fits your vehicle (OEM equivalent to the factory starter you have now), carries a lifetime warranty and be done with it. No need to upgrade to a "better" starter.
