Replacement Key from Dealer

I had my key break in the ignition.. and a locksmith came and had it removed.

I thought that I could get the dealer to make me a key from my VIN #, and they said I had to have a locksmith get the key code since its a 95 (anything before 2000 is apparently not in the system). Is this a new deal? I don't seem to remember this being the case in the past..

Should have had the locksmith cut you a new key when he removed the broken one.

$100 for a key? You must be kidding me.

Take the two halves down to your local hardware store. $1.50 / key.
Your 95 does not have a chip in the key, any standard key will work.

Not to hijack a thread but I figure I could help out a little and maybe get a little help. Yes you can absolutely get a key made from the hardware store for a little of nothing for your 95. Now with my 99 I only have one key. The little loop broke on it so I cannot connect it to any keychain at all. I just simply leave it in the ashtray with the car. How much will it cost me to get another key cut and a chip from the dealership. I would like to get 2 but I know its going to be expensive as hell...

+1, and you always have spares. Whether or not it's there with you or at ur parents house. But you always have to have a spare.

keys with chips costs about $65-$90.

Unfortunately, the locksmith left with the other half

:

One key is already broken off in the door.. then the spare broke in the ignition.

I'm not sure what to do because I can't afford another $100 for a key from the locksmith. I can't believe the dealer can't do it from a VIN #.

Turns out the guy at the dealership was just a tool.

I called another dealership about 15 miles south, told him the scenario.

He made me 2 keys for free, I just had to bring in the blank keys for him to make it.

What a nice guy.
