Question about EVAP canister (long)....
Question about EVAP canister (long)....
i apologize for the repetitive nature of this post, but I'm still going through issues with these two codes and kinda want to get it taken care of before winter... yes, I've been here before, and actually after pulling the canister and CVCV off my car last night... and applying 12v leads to the CVCV it did nothing.... the selonoid (sp?) didn't move.... which leads me to believe that the CVCV is shot....
does anyone know whether putting 'juice' to the CVCV should close or open the valve? Just didn't know if there was a 'pattern' to what it SHOULD be doing.... opening/closing when power is applied... ???
by the way... when I put pulled it off the car, the valve was open, which leads me to believe that this is why i'm getting the two error codes 7,5 and 3,9... seeing that when insufficient pressure is had in the gas tank... this is technically when you get these EVAP codes...
on another note, has anyone replaced the canister/CVCV by themselves? can anyone estimate how much they spent for either piece? also, when i had this stuff quoted to me from a dealer roughly 4 mo. ago, they mentioned that the CVCV (if i were to buy a new one) wouldn't fit the 'old' canister(what my '97 came with) ... something odd with the connection between the valve and canister... and that i'd have to buy both! jeez.... just curious if anyone has had a similar experience...
Thanks in advance,
Randy

Re: Question about EVAP canister (long)....
I had the same thing happen to my car. By the way when you read the codes, they translate to 0705 and 0309. When it happened to me, I was able to take advantage of the Federal warranty. Not the Nissan warranty, but the federal one. It covers the emissions system of any make of car for 3 years or 50K miles. Why not try lubricating the part and put it back in?? I remember someone on the org did that. Also, those parts can get pricey. Recently, I hit a bump in the rear of the car pretty hard when coming down off of an off-ramp (still getting used to my lowered car woth H&Rs). A couple of days later I got the code 0705. I look by the canister and find that the bump must have cause one of the plastics tubes that attach to the hoses for canister broke. Needless to say I had to replace the whole plastic part. Small part that fits in the palm of your hand. $80 from Nissan. Ouch.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply man... and sorry for the miss codes... that's what i mean.. i just wrote it shorthand... oops... unfortunately my car has 72,000 miles on it... and it's a '97 so i may just have to bite the bullet on this one seeing that i probably don't fit that 'federal' code anymore...
.... as for lubricating the part, that's exactly what i did last night... used some compressed air, and then a shot or two of some WD-40/lithium grease... i don't know though... hope it works, but i don't exactly have my hopes up... i cleared my service engine soon light, so we'll see if the thing pops up again in a day or two!! i'm just kinda sick of that darn 'service engine soon' light... that "yellow" sticks out on my dashboard like a sore thumb! ha ha ha ha... oh well... and as for that $80 part, was it the CVCV (purge valve?) attached to the EVAP canister? man... i didn't know they were like $80... ouch!! can only imagine how much that is to get installed etc... wow!! regardless, thanks for the info man.... I REALLY appreciate it!

Right by the canister there are at least 3 valves, the vacuum cut valve, the vacuum cut bypass valve, and the vent cotrol valve. Mine was the vacuum cut valve. There is also a purge control valve, but that sits inside the engine bay.
Yeah, that check engine light can be annoying, especially at night!

and all of those valve you mentioned (vacuum, vent, bypass) can all go bad? man.. my service engine soon light could be on forever... i hope i find the problem myself..... i could just imagine the 'hayday' the nissan dealer could have there charging me an arm and a leg...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Question about EVAP canister (long)....
More than came loose, it broke! Remember, the underbelly of my car bumped the ground on an off-ramp, so the plastic tube just gave out. The actual valve is fine, I just can't hook up anything to the part the broke securely. When it broke, the hose was hanging freely so the ECU definitely noticed a vacuum drop. Everything was secure down there. Don't worry too much about it, they don't break often, I've just got to ride a little slower when exiting a steep off-ramp now

you must have bumped the bottom hard... sorry to hear that.... didn't catch that for some reason the first time i read your post... regardless, thanks for the reply dude.....
I appreciate it... i just hope i get this stuff straightened out... funny how the government mandated a 'sealed' gas tank and now all these sensors in cars go off (ie. MY car)... i wonder of often of a code this appears like this in others cars.... hmmmmmm.... so, does your service engine soon light always stay on? if you can't create the 'vacuum' that your ECU is looking for? or did you plug it?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Question about EVAP canister (long)....
Yeah, its always on. I could reset the ECU, but it will only come back on soon anyways. I got the part today and I'm installing it tonight. Tired of the MIL yellow.

now I just need to figure out what is wrong w/my car... 100 miles since resetting the service engine soon light... and it still hasn't come back on....
(yes i drive roughly 100 miles a day) watch, now that i said that the next time i drive it i'll see that !^!#$^!#% yellow light! ...
Checked this thread, and I get similar DTC codes. 9-3 and 7-5 which shows as EVAP Canister vent control valve and EVAP Control System, which was probably tripped with the vent control valve code.
Question is this, what does the EVAP Canister vent control valve look like and is it possible to test this part? If anybody can post a picture with an arrow pointing to this part or have a link to a website where I can see a picture of it, that would be great. Thanks!

Don't have nay pics, but this descripttion may help;
under the left rear tire, there's a black box, that's the charcoal canister. There are bunch of valves connecting to it, at least 2 in front of it, and one in the back. The one in the back is the vent control valve. It's a black plastic thingy sticking out of the canister. It's purpose is to vent the vapors out of the charcoal canister into the air.
Hope this helps.

Bad purge valve?? That could be the one in the engine bay. By the canister you ahve the vent control valve, the vacuum cut valve and the vacuum cut bypass valve. The pruge control valve has 3 tubes in the engine bay.

If it is the one behind the canister, that one appears to only have one big tubue going into it, which is routed from the front of the canister (the fitting to the cannister is with two bolts). If my DTC codes says bad purge valve, then is it the valve that sits on on that piece that bolts to the cannister with two bolts or is it the device mounted on the frame rail behind the cannister that has another tube coming out of it venting to the area behind the rear bumper? Thanks again!
