Timing chain question

hey guys i have a quick question, i heard that on a lot of japanese cars you got to replace the timing belt after a certain amount of miles, but i know that maxima's have timing chains and didnt know if those also had to be replaced or if you just leave them alone, thanks

Leave it alone, maybe tighten it if it sounds slack.

uh....you can't "tighten" a TC.
If it rattles like it has some slack, then you need to change the TC tentioner. (not exactly fun)

Most people just leave it alone as it requires no maintainance

(unless you're over 250K miles)

...although I talked with a auto mechanic (the shop owner) who said don't be too confident about having no problems with timing chains because he's seen several break, not just stretch........ with the resultant catastrophic damage that you would expect with a interference type (valve to piston) engine. Having said that, I personally wouldn't go to the trouble of installing a new timing chain unless of course I had the front chain cover off....then it's just good insurance to replace it.

Did you look at the FSM for instructions? Did you set #1 at TDC before you took the old chain off? Did you search for the info?

Why are you even replacing the chain?

Do as Pmohr said ... and hope you're not 180º out.

Read ... Search .... Learn .... Do, then ask questions.

I had to replace the head gaskets because it was leaking water to the exaust side so since I had to take it off I figure it was smart to change the water pump and the chain and be done with it I did mark it before taking it off but I figure that after installing and turning the chain 4 times around it would come back at the same position I started but it never did

With as many links as there are, you'll be lucky if you ever get all of the marks to line back up.

Are you sure it's hitting the front cover, and not the guides? The former is rather unlikely.

Is it running the original tensioner, or the updated part per the TSB?

^^^ Yep. However if you haven't changed your water pump in a long time You should to it at the same time, as you have to access the TC tension to get it out. Mine makes the rattle and I know it's the timing chain because it makes the same noise for about 10 minutes after you replace it, but worse!
