Exedy Stage 1 Overkill?

I have done an extensive search and found many differing opinions about Exedy Clutches.

I am very unhappy with my stock clutch it doesn't hold very strong it never really has and it needs replaced now.

I have only bolt ons (y pipe b pipe intake ect.) and I only plan to do a few minor upgrades maybe a little boost.

I have found that everyone is extremely happy with exedy clutches for the most part OEM, stage 1 ect.

I have heard that that the exedy OEM holds better than stock OEM but will it be enough stage 1 is 2 times the price can i settle for OEM replacement?

For those who have exedy OEM replacemts what mods do you have and are you happy with how well it holds or do you wish you would have gone with the stage 1?

You should just do a search since this question has been answered numberous times.
However, just to make it easy:

On the Group buy forums you'll find importp selling exedy clutches. I Believe he is only selling the Exedy Stage 1 for below $300 shipped.

You can do the 5th gen clutch disk setup for a stronger clutch disk. (Which is what I will be moving over to soon). Many people w/ minor mods have been happy with this.

I did replace my clutch once with an OEM (Stage 0) and I regretted every minute of it. Mods were similar to yours but w/ JWT ECU and MEVI. The clutch went out after 40k... Of course it was driven hard.

I have an Exedy Stage 2 in my car right now... Love it... But my IPS is bad and I don't have the money to fix it right now so It's probably murdering my clutch.

I loved my Exedy stage 1, and I havent really heard any bad things about any of the Exedy clutches.
My stage 1 lasted for quite a while, and wasnt untill I went boosted that it finally began to slip a little. I opted for the Exedy stage II but after reading up on it, it wouldnt work well for my setup.
As 1chewabacha1, many have gone with the 5th gen setup and have been quite happy with them.

Really depends on how you drive.

OEM if you don't drive it hard
Exedy Stage I if you do.

If boost is in your future, then definitely Exedy Stage 1 at the least.

I'm rocking an Exedy Stage II, but my mods call for it. No complaints here.

Really? That kind of blows for me.
I was considering that clutch when I swapped out trannies and got discouraged from it. I really liked my stage 1, and was going to order the stage II untill I read that its torque capacity was rated at 262 Ft-lbs which I exceeded on my last dyno. Unless its a typo..

When time comes around again I may go that route.

I replaced my stock with an Exedy Stage 1, and I would never go back. I have bolt ons right now, the clutch isn't too harsh, and feels much like the stock one did except it can take one hell of a beating.
I would get at least a Stage 1 if you just have bolt ons, as soon as you drive it with that clutch you will never switch back.

Damn you Exedy for making clutches that don't break when they are supposed to! lol.

Sounds like you tranny was already on its way out, possibly too many drops down in to 2nd. I dont see how an OEM replacement clutch would destroy your tranny when others are running stage 1's and II's with no issues.

Yeah it definently was the tranny, it wouldn't matter what clutch he used at that point. No way a stage 1 would take a tranny out.

exedy stage 1 is my favorite mod by far..., well that and the ES mounts. but if your talking boost than you may want to look for something else.

Exedy is good, you can also look into other options like a spec clutch kit, im using clutchmasters stage 3, holds up real strong, car chirps in third gear, but for regular driving, the pressure plate is light so you get the OEM pedal feel, no calf workout. but whatever you pick, try to stay away from ebay clutch kits, its a good bit of work to replace when ur clutch goes out after 10k miles. another bit of advice i have is, try to stay away from puck design clutches, they are tranny killer unless ur tranny is built

I used a stage one Exedy on a 02 frontier and I was very happy with it. It made a bit of noise when cold but the clamping force was amazing. Stock clutch always burned when pulling a trailer.. no such problem after the exedy was installed.

I have an Exedy Stage 1 in my 95 maxima with minor bolt ons, and love it. I have used many clutches in different cars and Exedy, for light mods is the best.

Consider that the stage 2 option from Exedy uses a Cerametallic Disc. The issue here is that these are not very streetable. They get very hot easily and thus glaze over, causing slippage early on! I have in my S2K an Exedy stage 2 and hate life because of it. I only use the car once and a while; I'd say that the clutch has only 5k miles on it, but I do drive it hard and like to get aggressive on cornors. Non the less it is slipping whenever I have load on the motor or when cracking Vtec (dont kill me Nissan guys for saying that)!

Sadly there isn't much inbetween the Stage 1 (organic) or Stage 2 (Cereamic, or Metallic) so you kinda have to go soft or go seriously hard. I am doing more motor work to the S2K and have plans to order the Exedy Twin Disc (aka ankle killer). But for you I'd say use the Exedy or if you want a bit more grab get an ACT Stage 1. It cost more but holds tighter, the only reason I stopped using them is that the Disc chatter when they are wearing out. But all this is just my opinion based on my experience.

Oh I don't mind that believe me. Yes, it's a good thread for the newbies... but when someone tries to answer the original poster's question from a WHILE back... then it's a different story.
