brake upgrade with sawblades???

The front brakes on my 95 SE are approaching the end of their life cycle and I'm looking into a possible upgrade when I go to replace them. I looked thru some of the older threads but couldn't find info about what upgrades will fit with stock 15" sawblades. Do I really have any options besides stock rotors and upgraded pads or will most of them require 16" or 17" wheels?

Pretty much any BBK is going to require bigger than 15" rims. Get some good rotors, pads, and flush out the brake fluid and your stock brakes should stop pretty well.

BBK are nice if you are racing your car since the brakes are less likely to over heat. However, if you do the upgrade, you might get worse response if you don't replace the master cylinder. Just stick with stocks. There is really no need to to a BBK unless you just want it for the looks. The brakes on our cars are fairly good. And as pmohr as said, you will need bigger wheels for almost all the BBK.

Another vote for Brembo blanks and Hawk HPS pads here.....

Unless you're going all out, or have major performance mods, there's no need for a massive BBK or even a mild one IMO.

go with cross drilled and slotted rotors and performance pads, getting a bbk is worth while if u race with it alot cuz if u dont than its just there to be decorative, but u choose how u feel abt ur own car

trust me i really regret getting hte crossdrilled/slotted.....because.....drilled takes of surface area off the rotor, and slotted kills the life of the pad almost in 1/2....get a brembo blank with a hawk pad i promise you wont regret it

Brembo blanks, Hawk HPS pads, Teflon coated SS lines and flush the old brake fluid out. Even though a lot of people on here are saying get a really good DOT 4 fluid, most any DOT 3 would still work really well on the street, even for spirited driving. Also, with drilled/slotted rotors (besides what the other guys have mentioned) you can not get them machined. If you warp a rotor(s) you will need to replace them. Also, bed them in properly or you will hate life!!

To the OP, good luck and keep us posted. FWIW, if you decide to go with a 300ZX brake upgrade (Z32) make sure you research BMC sizes, booster sizes and brake proportioning. These will make a difference in how your car stops. Also, they MAY fit under your stock wheels. Depending on which front calipers you get (26mm vs 30mm) and your offset/spoke design, you may be able to get them under the stock wheels with no spacer or at most a 5mm spacer. I say you get out there and do it! I have known plenty of S13 guys fit 26mm front Z32 brakes under stock 15x6 +40 offset seven spoke SE wheels. It can be done. Good luck!

Shamus, J30 calipers and Z32 rotors will fit under stock 15" sawblades. I've got my stock sawblades on my car right now and they work just fine. This combo is cheap but requires a bit of custom grinding and what not to make everything work. I and others have posted threads detailing if you want more info.

That said, if you aren't going to be road racing your car, all you need are some decent pads to get you all the braking power you would ever need on the street.

Thanks guys. I guess I will just go with some stock rotors and some Hawk HPS pads with a fluid flush and maybe look at getting some SS braided brake lines for an upgrade.

If you do get some SS lines, make sure you get the Teflon coated lines. Wouldn't want them to start to fray! Honestly, for the amount of money you are going to end up spending, that is going to be the best option. You will not be disappointed.

Where the best place to get some telfon coated lines? I know tirerack has some Goodridge ones, but I don't think they are telfon coated.

Considering Brembo's $2400 GT BBK comes with standard Goodyear ss lines, I think it's safe to say you'll be fine with them.....

I would seriously not bother with SS lines shamus. Way more work than they're worth for a street car. They don't make you stop any better, they just make your brake pedal a little more predictable when things start to really heat up when you're getting on the brakes really hard, harder than you would be able to on the street. I would skip them.

Good point Neal. Maybe I'll forgo those. Don't really plan to take the Maxie to the track.
