Look through the diff, if you see the pin for the spider gears it's an open diff. If not, VLSD.

Look at the drivers side axle, if it's double splined, VLSD. If not, open.

If it's the original trans and your car is a USDM 4th gen Maxima, then it's open diff. If not, who knows.

Search.

And for the love of god, STOP YELLING.

You need to check your damn caps lock button before you post.

Cliffs: You yell too much.

The VLSD is 'better' in that you'll have better traction in most situations.

It doesn't matter unless you plan on buying either a VLSD trans or an aftermarket diff.

Well even if you buy a used tranny you will want to have it checked out i.e opened and checked. The 5sp lsd or non lsd have bearing problems.

All 4th gens, basically. If the diff moves around at all, crack it open and have it rebuilt.

Well is it? Is it on the rack?

If you have no idea what it is, and can't adequately describe it, then you're gonna have to show pics.

If the boot is torn, you'll need to fix it. Now, by "it" I mean, whatever it is. If it goes from the wheel to the trans, it's a CV boot, if it's tucked up toward the firewall a bit more, it's a rack boot. Either way, it will only cause more problems if you don't fix it now. Have you checked your PS fluid level? If it's a CV boot, you'll see the slung grease all over the place. It's not really that hard to tell axle grease apart from PS fluid. Well ... for most anyway! lol
