TRANSMISSION QUESTION
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE TWO TYPES OF TRANNYS ARE FOR THE 4TH GEN MAX AND HOW CAN I TELL, WHATS THE OBVIOUS, IM ASKING THIS QUESTIION CAUSE IM ABOUT TO GET MY TRANNY REBUILT AND NEED TO KNOW THE DIFFENECE????
Look through the diff, if you see the pin for the spider gears it's an open diff. If not, VLSD.
Look at the drivers side axle, if it's double splined, VLSD. If not, open.

If it's the original trans and your car is a USDM 4th gen Maxima, then it's open diff. If not, who knows.
Search.
And for the love of god, STOP YELLING.
You need to check your damn caps lock button before you post.

thanks for the help, question is one transmission better than another, the reason i ask is when i did a burn out the other day i noticed that i left two deep tire marks and im so used to only seeing one this is why i asked this question thanks for the input
It doesn't matter unless you plan on buying either a VLSD trans or an aftermarket diff.

well that brings me too another problem i came across when looking under there on my drivers side i noticed another rubber boot there that has torn and it looks like it may come from the steering what to do ??????
If the boot is torn, you'll need to fix it. Now, by "it" I mean, whatever it is. If it goes from the wheel to the trans, it's a CV boot, if it's tucked up toward the firewall a bit more, it's a rack boot. Either way, it will only cause more problems if you don't fix it now. Have you checked your PS fluid level? If it's a CV boot, you'll see the slung grease all over the place. It's not really that hard to tell axle grease apart from PS fluid. Well ... for most anyway! lol
