Whines in 1st, maybe 1/8 as loud in 2nd, completely gone by 3rd. Idles like a Lexus. Smooth, nothing to worry about.

I replaced all the bearings "rebuilt" the tranny a year or so back and the first gear whine remained. However when it whined in higher gears, like 5th...I knew there was a problem. That was before the rebuild obviously...and I had alot of noise at idle etc.

It naturally happens in 1st and reverse, and is common in 5th gear in some cars.
The sound is actually present in all gears, its just easier to hear in high ratio's (1st, reverse), or when little other noise is present (5th + quiet smooth road + low rpms).
Sometimes a bad bearing can produce a whining sound, but it differs alot. Nothing to stress 'bout dude.

Mine does a little, but it's pretty quiet. I only really notice it if I don't have music on and there isn't a ton of outside noise.

Reverse makes the most whine because it has a straight cut gear in the mesh.

1st sometimes sounds slightly whiny and that's also normal since the tooth overlap is the lowest of the drive gears. I can barely hear it, so I voted "no". Since all gears are the same width in a Maxima, and the teeth get finer as you go up, the overlap ratio improves and they run smoother.

exactly what mine does. it's a 1999 SE. it also makes a different type whining noise in reverse at high speed.
