Y-pipe design

I'm going to be having a custom Y made up in the near future and would appreciate your views on its possible build-up. Unfortunately the exchange rate and shipping to Australia makes the US built pipes far too expensive to consider at the moment.

What I'd like to know is how the commonly used design of the two pipes meeting in a collector and entering the cat as one (Cattman etc) would alter the power/torque characteristics as opposed to running the pipes seperately into a twin-entry cat. The performance exhaust shop I use believes theres advantages in scavenging with the twin-entry design (I had this style used on headers for the 3rd Gen) and they want to use this again but I'm not totally convinced of its worth this time round.

A picture may explain it better, so heres a few of the twin-entry design on my 3rd Gen to show how the custom Y would look if built this way,

Personally I'd prefer noticable gains in torque before peak power if a trade-off had to be made. Which leads me to another question

Is the normal 2 into 1 pipes power output affected by the manifold to collector length, and has anyone played with 'tuning' a custom Y? Even if the results were insignificant I'd be interested to hear them.

Thanks.

y-pipe

Ip, You might want to give Dallas a call as we are experienced international shippers. From what I know a y-pipe made here should fit. Making a custom made pipe is a big pain in the butt. Our aluminized mandrel bent ones are $225 US. No idea how much shipping is. Flanges, lined flex sections can be difficult to line up, besides if you shop isn't using mandrel bending you are missing gains. Put it this way, a real pain. See what Dallas say re shipping. Good luck. BTW if it were a year from now, I could personally deliver it to Australia. I think thats where you are from?

Believe me Dan, I'd be all for the WS pipe if I was closer but the large distance and nasty exchange rate is the killer. $225US still works out at around $750-800AUS after conversion, shipping and taxes. I've enquired in the past and even for the most die-hard enthusiast, thats just unrealistic. As a comparison the locally made mandrel headers cost me $650AUS.

Custom cost here in mild steel w/mandrel bends for the Y pipe will be around $400AUS , which means WS would have to list a $90US version of the mandrel pipe to get my cash. I'm only kidding mate, but you can see the craziness of the situation for us Aussies

The shop I'd use again is pretty full-on specializing in mandrel bent headers, turbo manifolds etc and also have a fully equipped in-house dyno so theres no issues on getting exactly what I want built. Big plus is thats its only 3 miles away, so I can drop off the car and walk home.

Owning an exhaust shop yourself, you'll probably like their website

Just look for the shipping and conversions. But it does sound like a good idea. I know you are big on trying to keep the costs low.

indeed, considering that I'm racing the car so I still need to buy racing stuff and I'm going to Israel and maybe Europe $$$ is always an issue, and I'm kinda getting discouraged about maxima being a real race car, so I don't want to spend more than I have too, especially if the y-pipe not REALLY gonna give me too much for the $200 cheapest pipe as of right now (budget)

y-pipe

FYI: WarpSpeedPerformance y-pipes; Aluminized non-mandrel bent with latest flex is $195, mandrel bent 1s $225, no better deal out there and made in USA.

Gotta agree with Dan here. Although the imported pipe itself would be competitive price wise the shipping would be a minimum of $100US in addition to whatever customs/taxes would be payable on arrival. Get the Warpspeed mandrel bent and consider yourselves blessed to have the Maxima aftermarket world based in your own backyard.
