I have had this issue and cannot seem to find anything on it. Car runs great with no codes. However, i would estimate that 1 in 5 times the car stalls on start-up. If it is stalling it will continue to stall each time I try and restart. If I give it even just a tiny bit of gas, it stays running. Any thoughts??

 

check/clean the IACV and TB.

 

My beater does this too. Not a big deal for me so I don't bother trying to diagnose.

I replaced the IACV about 2 months ago since the old one was SHOT...I haven't pulled apart the new one yet though...I will try that. CTS was replaced a few years ago but the symptoms are not the same. Only reason I am trying to get it fixed is to sell it. I just picked up my 09 last night and want to sell mine. Everything else works great, just this last starting problem and it's out the door!

 

I have this sort of issue as well .... but mine is way random. If it doesn't catch on the first try, and stay going, I let it set for a few seconds, always does fine the second go round. Dunno ... I'm with Neal on this .... doesn't bother me bad enough I guess.

 

I think you need to clean your throttle body, I have been having start up problems too, and after doing some research it seems like I am suffering from the exact symptoms a car would with a dirty throttle body so I am going to try to clean it this weekend. Doesn't look too hard.

 

It might be the throttle position sensor. You can check it with an ohm meter. Disconnect the battery. Remove the connector(s) on the TPS--one connector is for wide open throttle--the other is for position. It(the position one) should read .5K ohms at rest and move steadily to about 4K Ohms at full open. Check it after it has sat for a while and again after it has ran for a while. Should see the same readings. Even if it reads OK it can still be bad. Try pumping the gas a couple of times after it sits for awhile--then start it. If the stumbling seems to go away--it could be the TPS. The TPS is a potentiometer which varies resistance based on position. The pot can wear giving an intermitent problem. The pumping of the gas/throttle moves the pot back and forth which helps--for a while.

I didn't get a chance to check the resistance yet, will be doing that tonight. However, I did try hitting the pedal a few times before starting and that did not help. I also tried hitting the pedal a few times while switched on but not running - this resulted in a stumbled, rich start - indicating it is getting plenty of gas. I am hoping this is not a fuel pump issue or something.

I cleaned out the IACV and it seemed pretty clean. I cleaned the TB a while back and haven't gotten that apart to take a look. It is just such a weird problem.

I just tested the TPS per the FSM. When the throttle is closed it reads 0.5 kohm (spec.) and ramps up to 2.3 kohm (spec is 4kohm). Does this sound like it could be far enough out of spec to cause such a problem? As of right now it starts up fine every time, whereas yesterday it stalled every time for like 10 times. UGH!

 

you know, its a very much neglected part, but have u changed ur PCV VALVE? it might sound like it not the case but it did solve my case and i had the SAME EXACT issue as you.

I read through that before I posted my thread. I am not sure what the problem can be and it's very frustrating! I haven't tried cleaning the EGR or anything else like that.

It's so weird that most of the time it starts right up - no problems. Other times it starts normally and the RPMs go up to like 1000 but then instead of settling around 700, it just continues to drop and stalls. If at any point once the car is started i touch the gas pedal - even just an extremely gentle touch, it stays running just fine.... ugh!

 

So did you clean both TB and IACV recently ? When did you replace the fuel filter ?

In my case it stalls even before reaching 200 rpm. But if I help it pass the 200rpm point with the gas pedal it starts.

 

All of these have been taken care of. IACV and TB cleaned recently and fuel filter is virtually new.

 

I think I may have found a buyer this afternoon and I told him about the stalling and he didnt seem to mind. Hopefully he'll buy it and it will be outta my hands. Then I can use the money on my new 7th gen!!
