95-96 rear tail lights

Ok so I got a set of 95-96 red/clear tail lights on ebay but when removing the OEM tails I notice the OEM has a light harness with bulbs and the red/clear from ebay has light sockets instead the mounts to put the harness on.

Am I missing something? Do I have to do some kind of mod to get these tails to work on my car?

so the connectors on the new lights won't plug into the connectors on the car? ads say no mods needed.

I know what he's talking about, thats the main reason why I didn't get them. Rather than having that square cut out in the back of the tails to just attach the harness with bulbs on it, there's circular holes to stick the bulbs into separately.

Pic for reference:

BINGO...Thanks for the picture...So how do I get those tails on? I don't think the bulbs screw right in without some type of mount.

Apparently they didn't send you the wiring harness. Look at these red/clears on ebay, they have a harness that plugs in to the stock harness. The pictures are down the page...

Yeah... Don't ever get Ebay Altezza junk is all I can say to this. But yes, you should receive a harness with this.

Hey, at least they watermarked it so no one can use the image of "your" car without "their" permission. O.o

Agreed, you need the aftermarket harness with bulb connectors.

The sellers ID is watermarked on that pic. Not hard to find on Ebay.

Many members have had their pics jacked and used on Ebay auctions. Ive had mine jacked by many websites, including Andys Auto Sports. Once a pic is placed on the net, its free game for anyone to use it.

wow, I'd be pissed if they just took pictures of my car and used them for marketing purposes... Either they pay me, or remove the picture. But you should contact the seller for the harness, or, make one yourself. shouldn't be too hard

How can you make them remove the picture?
Once pics are posted on the web there available to anyone who wishes to use them, immoral yes, but they can do it.
Thats why people watermark their pics...
Now back to the harness, he needs the sockets the bulbs go into, they are made to fit into those notches on the tails. Cant make those.

this is strange, the lights i've seen on ebay, all have the harnesses and say they don't
need any mods. can you post which ebayer is selling the lights w/o the harnesses. i'm thinking about getting the red/clears. is it the one shown in the link or some other?

Ok, i have the answer that will solve ur problem . I have just successfully installed these same tail lights yesterday in my 96 black gle max. I was in the same situation as u are. I ordered these tail lights from K2 Motor's website and received them last week. On their website there are pictures of the tail lights from front view and back view with the wire harness displayed. The ad states, "Direct Replacement, All Wiring Pre-Assembled." This was of course a lie as i received the tail lights without the wire harness. I then called the company and i explained to them that i was missing the wire harness. I was told that they were going to check the warehouse to see if the others have the harness. I called back and to my dissapointment, i was told that these tail light do not come with the wire harness. Frustrated, i was very close to returning them for a refund, until one day this week i made a trip to the local junk yard in search for some parts for my max.

I happened to have found a 98 black max in the junk yard and noticed that the tail light harness is different than 95-96. The wire harness from the tail lights that are located on the sides, not the trunk tail lights, seemed similar to the harness in the red/clear pics. (the harness from the trunk tail lights have a white socket that is too small and wont fit the openings of the red/clears, although the black socket it's attacked to will fit, but disregard this harness.) So i searched for another 97-99 maxima with a pair of wire harnesses on the outer tails, which i did and took these with me to do my mod.

When i got home, i tried to put the socket into the tail lights but only the 1156 (the light bulb socket with the one dot connection) side of the harness seemed to have fit in perfectly. The 1157(the light bulb socket with the two dot connection) did not fit into the tail light. So follow what i did:
  • on the sockets of the harness, there are locks that are supposed to fit inside the tail light. the pattern of the placement of the locks are different on the 1156 socket than the 1157 socket.
  • the locks of the 1156 socket fits perfectly into the tail light because the pattern of the locks match.
  • with the 1157 socket, u have to completely sand off the tiny thin lock that is supposed to fit in the widest of the lock openings of the tail lights.
  • U will also have to sand around the openings of the tail lights in order for the sockets to fit.
  • for the lone wire harness with the small light bulb located on the outer tails, you can just use the ones on ur car.
I hope this info helps u. if u have any questions, you can just ask me or if u want me to post any pics.

haha i emailed Zoku racing....

me :i got a question for you. Why do you have a picture of a 98-99 maxima with some 95-97 tail lights cropped on it? and another question why do you think you can use a pic of someones car without asking them, i know this aint your car because it is my car

them: Sorry if it offended you for using your car as our simple picture. I will notify our graphic designer to not use your car and get that fix ASAP

Thanks,
Zoku

Idk if the problem was solved but I got the same lights and they didnt come with a wiring harness either. A quick WTB thread in the 4th gen classifieds found several people who had spare wiring harnesses for sale.

These have a crystal design, very shiney. David L's is more stock looking, which i think looks dull compared to the crystal design. So far in less than 5 days since installing my red/clears, i've gotten many many complements on the look.

I find the eBay 1s to be sort of cheap looking. Too many little squares and too crystal like. David L's are only the outer tails, once all clear, then the lower half is painted red. They're extremely rare and more OEM looking the those eBay 1's.

David L's:

eBay Red/Clears:

-Sorry jxkim for using your pic, its the 1st 1 I found that was sort of taken like mine.

It really isnt alot of work. this took me about 30 minutes to customize. im not a car guy at all. i have the slitest idea when it comes to modifying cars. all i did was use common sense. If u want, i can sand the wire harness for u and send them to u? or u can just do it for free, which is quite easy.

You have a extra set of harness?

I guess its not a lot of work after reading your post again and I had time to cool down.

I plan a trip to the junk yard this week.

Yeah thats the only downside to the David L's. The inners will never match the outers, unless maybe you gave the outers a light tint with that VHT NightShade stuff. Thats the only thing I though of.

I wouldn't try that...it'd be way too difficult to get the shade exactly right.

IMO, David.l's are the best you're going to get as far as getting good and stock looking 95-96 tails.

If you're that worried about them matching exactly, convert to a 97+ and buy the red/clears off ebay

EDIT: OP, I've got some harnesses that came with some red/clears that I killed (don't ask). If these are what you need, PM me and I'll get 'em out to ya. (I've got 4 of the white harness ones and 2 of the gray, so if anyone else needs some, PM me as well)

I wouldn't try it either believe me, it was just the only solution I thought of. They're the best to me as well. The OP should definitely buy those harnesses off you.

Thanks Coolsaber57, I just got the wires in the mail today and installed the tails without a problem.

On any forum, no one has ever done what you did for me. Thanks for the handout.

Now only if I could figure out how to take that black sticky staff off my hands

N/p dude, I'm just paying it forward, hope you do the same for someone else in need someday

Good luck with that sticky crap...just don't get it on the carpet, it doesn't come out.

Ask me how I know
