Whats wrong with CAI?
I see a lot of 4th gen owners going back to the OEM setup. Why? Is the CAI systems no good?
I've had to replace the starter a couple of times now and a CAI would make that job so much easier than removing the stock air box and snorkel.

The CAI or cone type of intake pulls hot air in from the engine bay.
A true CAI needs to go into the inner fender wheel well.
No noticable gains from them, auto's suffer a very noticable loss of throttle response with a cone setup.
The stock setup provides the best throttle response and overall performance.
You can tweak the stock setup slightly to allow a bit more air to enter the system with no negative side effects. Just open up the resonator box under the battery or redirect the tube under the snorkle to a fresh, cool air access point.

njmax has already explained it. You have to remember that when we are talking about the CAI being bad..its specifically meant for our cars. We're not stating that CAI is bad for a toyota, honda, acura, etc. We mean for our cars. The CAI that you usually buy from injen, are sucking hot air and not cold air. The PR (place racing??) makes you drill a hole in the fender so you can get cold air. Throttle response like njmax says is horrible with a CAI. I didn't believe any of these people so i bought a used injen one for like $80. I sold it the next day. LOL. It was so horrible, i felt like i lost 35 hp. You can either take our word for it, or try it yourself. But if you've read after that guy mantis40 claims he gained so much mp and throttle response, i wouldn't believe a word he said

OK is there a discussion of how to open up the resonator box under the battery? I know where is.. do I just cut holes in it anywhere?

Simple, remove that box, I believe two screws hold it in place.
Drill out the rear section facing the inner fender.
Reinstall.
The best setup would be to just tie into that elbow and route it through the inner fender into the inner wheel well. (eliminate the box)
That would provide another source of true cold air into the intake system.
I always wanted to do that, just never got around to it.

Here's a link to a guy in Sweden who's done a lot to a 3rd gen. Some things can be used on our 4th gens, like modified air flow. Lots of interesting reading. Caveat - I don't agree with ALL his ideas, but some are solid.
