If anyone needs a valve cover gasket set w/ spark plug tube seals, I just picked one up from Pep Boys for $41 (came out to $45 w/ tax)

They have the Fel-Pro VS50494R kit for $51 (other stores have it for $55-$60) and I was able to use this $10 off coupon to get it down to $41: http://localstores.pepboys.com/tirepromo1coupon.html (coupon didnt scan so they manually adjusted the price to $41)

Will do a full tuneup + knock sensor + valve cover gaskets + clean TB/IACV + oil change next weekend if the weather is good

^^^ Thread jack!
I will do the same except KS.

I just got in the mail my gasket set. after looking through it I have a question.

The IACV gasket is paper? The one I got last time from the dealer is metal (the one that's on now). Is this paper one good enough or should I get another one from the dealer?

No. The TB gasket is paper. The IACV one is metal. The IACV one is a triangle. TB one is square.

Also, get black RTV pictured above, but the high-heat one.

My IACV gasket was plastic...I got it at the dealer (and still haven't installed it, lol...)

I bought the black high temp RTV already.

So should I get a metal IACV from the dealer? I think I will call the place where I got the gasket set from and complain. I think the one on the picture is metal.

You guys talked me into the DIY. I hope when the time comes I can do it all in a day with no complications because it is my daily driver and I have no other car to use.

BTW I got side swiped today and the car will be going to a body shop before I do any of the gasket work.
I can come help you if you want? But I heard that you already replaced one of them.

The front is done. Drove more than 100 mils and no leaks. I think we did a good job so far. Next time is the rears turn. I am still waiting on the metal IACV gasket.

Could I reuse the one that is on the car and just put some RTV on it?

I have a stupid question. What leaks out of the manifold gaskets? My car has some type of greasy residue in that area. My car also seems to lose a quart of oil / month, but it's not leaking out the bottom onto the ground.

Is it oil?

It's likely just the valve cover gaskets leaking, and the oil blowing back.

Proud owner of 95 Maxima SE, 226k miles...looking to replace the valve cover gaskets. Been smelling burning oil and by appearance it appears to be coming from those areas. Also had a mechanic look at it couple months ago and mentioned replacement of "front crank shaft" seal.
after reading some of these posts doesnt appear to be hard to do, just getting the few hours to do front and rear, or at separate times.
-Anyone else with a maxima with that High Mileage and would like to comment and share experiences.

Newbie here, 95 Maxima SE (226k) similar issue. Burning Oil, most likely blowing back off valve cover gasket.

new to this forum and looking for any help and advise. Where should i get the gaskets? should i get a kit?

Well it's either burning, or it's leaking from the valve cover gaskets...

I would just get the head gasket kit from eBay, includes every gasket you'll need to you can also do the KS if necessary, clean IACV/TB, etc.

The kit I got does not have the proper IACV gasket for some reason. After 5-6 times on the phone and email they are going to give me back $10 so that I can get it from the dealer.

I'm a little confused by the FSM as to where to put the bead of Permatex. I know it's only supposed to go in the corners near the timing chain side but do I make the bead:

1) on the inside side of the rubber gasket
2) on the outside side of the rubber gasket
3) on top of the rubber gasket

maybe I'm overthinking things??

just slightly...apply not to the gasket but to the mating surface on the head.

I put RTV all the way around on the head. Also you have to put some in the little groove of the cover where the gasket sits so that it can stay in as you are putting the cover back on.

By the FSM, you should be applying to the gasket, not the head. This has worked out for me best in the past as well, assembling various motors and doing valve covers.

No reason to put RTV all the way around, if it's torqued properly, it won't leak. Just makes more of a PITA to clean it all up later, and could possibly create a leak or get RTV where it shouldn't be.

^you're right (as always )but i did a bead all around the head and was affraid that the rtv would smear if the gasket shifted etc.

Thanks everyone! A small bead right on top of the rubber gasket is where it's going then.

I can't find the gasket kit on ebay. I'm trying to get all the things I need to replace my KS and clean out the IACV. Any links to gasket kits would help.

Also:
Back home in Bulgaria we always put RTV all the way around. We might of done that because we reused the gaskets so that we save money.

I will agree that it is better to put it on the cover not the head.
We will be working on the rear cover this weekend and I will put the RTV on the gasket instead of the head.

What color should my head be on the inside? Mine was a golden type brown. I did an Auto-Rx last year and am doing another with this oil change right after we change the gaskets. I usually use MaxLife blend.

I was thinking that after I am done with the Auto-Rx I will do at least one oil change with Pennzoil Platinum. According to BITOG forums it will clean my engine very well.

Any input will be appreciated.

Regarding the coolant lines to the UIM , does the coolant need to be drained in those lines? or is there nothing in the lines when car has been sitting for while?

Someone needs to make a picture tutorial on VC replacement !

When I eventually get around to it, I plan on making a video tutorial for it.

No real need to drain anything, there's not much coolant in there at all.

any input on my question?

Oh, and I am still getting 12mpg in town. I ran an injector cleaner and got a PureOne air filter and still no change. When I pulled the plugs to change the gasket they looked ok. I mean no sign of rich or lean running.

Which question? Reusing the IACV gasket? Or what color everything should be?

Since the only question I see there is the color question (the rest are statements), that color is fine.

For your MPG, search, read all of the MPG threads, follow the maintenance instructions.

If your upstream O2s are old, replace them.

They are BOSCH and are like a year old. I have read it all and still don't get it. My highway MPG is still great. I can't figure out how come my town is 12 MPG and highway is 27+.

EDIT: This has been since I put in the 95 ecu. the car is a 96, the engine is a 95 (swapped before I bought the car). I used to have a CEL all the time because some of the emission stuff was never there and the 96 ECU was complaining. With the 95 ecu CEL is off and NO CODES. KS is new, O2s are new etc.

yea, you're going to have to diagnose that one on your own. I would maybe suggest a new gas station??? sometimes my car likes to get gas from different places...don't ask....when i start to get low mpg..i go to a different gas station, and bam....mileage comes back??? And i have tend to notice that when i put fuel injector cleaner in my car, the tank with the fuel injector lasts a long time. The next tank right after i use up the tank with the fuel injector cleaner gets horrible gas mileage. I'm not sure if its jsut me or not, but i keep on getting almost the same results...
