What are some little things that make the tone of your engine different than others?
I have about a dozen friends with 4th gen Maximas and I30's and I always wonder if they got something special under their hood because all of our engines pretty much have a slightly different tone. Even if we have the same intake setup we still have a slighty different tone. I have Injen and it sounds amazing.
But what causes different tones in the sound coming from the engine/intake? Do 5spds sound different than autos? Is it the temperature of the air going into the intake? Fresh oil change? Bigger air filter? Or little mods that I dont know about?

aside from exhausts but,
Do you all have different intake brands? Filters?
Filters can change the sound. A K&N style will be slightly louder than a foam type like a monsterflow (from my experience, Ive tried almost every intake setup over the years).
When I was auto, the revs were slower and required more engine load to get it revving. I converted to 5speed with a lightweight flywheel and the revs are pretty quick will less harsh tone.
Once I added my MEVI, its now much quieter and smooth. Less growl.
Some 4th gens have those smog butterfly swirl valve things on the heads and that can probably change tone also.
Other than that, could be engine condition. Ive heard some pretty nasty sounding STOCK 4th gens that sound rougher than hell.

I'm sure Kev or someone else will clean up shop here shortly. I would if I was a mod, but

Anthony: Kill the attitude. Maybe this is how you act in Ronkonkoma, but not here.
