Trunk rattle under trunk, in between Right rear fender and trunk

Anyone else get this? Its really annoying, but i cant seem to pin point it because of the lack of access in between the rear driver side fender and the trunk floor. There's a space which seems to go under the trunk floor and thats where i here the high pitched metal rattling.

Have you tried removing the jack and reaching around through there?

I did that a while back and found some spark plugs and a distributor cap

yea, that side is perfect. no rattle. Its the drivers side. i tried looking under the car and there's some metal box in the way, and i have no idea what its for but it seems to be above the box.

I too have a metallic clanking from the back end. I saw a mechanic, he put it on a lift and he couldn't figure it out either. He did find the source of the "popping" sound that happens when I come to a stop. Its my brake pads shifting.

I think that has to do with the egr system.
I believe nissan once told me it was the charcol canister.
I could be horribly wrong though.
waiting for pmohr to check in...

The bars that hold the trunk up.

And the black box is the EVAP canister, on later models. Earlier models had them in the engine bay.

if you mean all those rods attached to trunk lid, then no. I fixed that problem by wrapping a area where 2 rods would cross and it went away.

My specific sound is coming from above that box. Is it safe to remove for further inspection?

ok think i found it. its not the Evap Canister, its a hollow box next to it attached to the inside of the fender. Seems to have like some rubber sheet behind it and i think thats what making a "flapping" noise". The metal noise is under my spare tire. I got under there, turned up the bass and something is indeed rattling in there(probably my jack tools against each other). I dont know what that box is for but im about to find out. brb

I dunno what it is but im guessing to release heat from the trunk and to keep moisture out at the same time? That rubber flap you see in the first picture lays across the cage part of the black box and thats what was making the loud noise! I couldnt believe a piece of rubber could be so loud.

Anyways, i removed it. Going to put the box back and stuff it with poly fiber or something to prevent moisture from getting in.

I believe that is the pressure release box. Most cars have them; when you slam the door inside the car it lets air escape so that you don't feel the pressure on your ears. But it does not let air or moisture in...

Nice shot of your LR sunroof drip tube, if anyone ever wants to know where that is.

is it coming from outside or inside the car? I had a rear deck rattle i fixed. Would rattle at every small bump. Taped some stiff cardboard where the X's are cut and it seemed to give it more support. Problem was the center of the rear deck had little support and would wobble, making a rattling noise. Kinda like those sheets of metal they use in old films to recreate sounds of thunder.

Mine's a '96 and it's definitely from outside the car. I'm certain its not from the rear deck/trunklid (my mom rode in the trunk and said it's coming from below!). :-P

LOL!

yea man, only way to find out is lift it up and start shaking ****. I had a exhaust hanger completely rust out, and would bang against the other half of itself (broke in half) and make noise. at first i thought it was inside my muffler, until i started wiggling everything until i pin pointed it.

Btw... That valve IS a cabin pressure release valve (also called many other things). However... the main purpose that it is there is to allow the air circulate through your car. What happens is as you are going down the road, the a/c or heater (or even if you have your recirculation selection on your a/c off.) pulls air through the vents in front of the windshield and pushes the air into your car...welll... that air needs someplace to go because otherwise it's gonna build up pressure inside of the cabin. So the air flows through the car and out that hole in the rear of your car. The reason it rattled with the subs is because the subs create positive and negative pressures causing those flaps to push out and pull back in. One of the downsides to having subwoofers ...so... keep that hole clear of anything that'll obstruct air flow otherwise your A/C won't blow as hard but make sure that water won't find it's way back into your trunk (which chances are... it won't... you're probably fine without it).

Second thought... after taking a better look at that picture.. I would probably keep that valve on it cause those valves are in a horrible place on our cars. Water can fill up in that inner fender pretty easily it looks like. Awesome place for it to rust.
