Cancer removed, EVAP 0705 code fixed

Ever since I bought my car in March, I've occasionally noticed a fuel odor coming from the drivers rear of the car. I also noticed that when removing my fuel cap, there was no pressure in the tank from the EVAP system. Initially, there were no ECU codes, but the other day code 0705 (P0440), small EVAP leak, showed up.

From Pmohr's decoder:
Code: P0440 | Description: EVAP (Small Leak)

In addition to the code, I noticed some fuel spillage the last two times i filled up. I'm not one of those guys who lets the nozzle auto shutoff five times to get every last drop in the tank. The auto shutoff would happen once during fueling, and i would notice a puddle of gas under my car.

So Friday I pulled off the shroud that protects the filler tube and found that one of the mounting points for the shroud completely rusted away, and it had caused this on the filler tube:

As you can see, I cut the cancerous section out, and I replaced it with a random piece of radiator hose from Advance and some hose clamps. Now when I remove my gas cap, I hear the pressure escaping, which is music to my ears.

This is just an FYI to all you guys out there getting EVAP system leak codes. Hopefully this saves someone some time and money.

FWIW I would replace that rad hose with something that's actually rated for fuel use, such as the proper part.

I thought about that. The rad hose is mainly meant to be a temporary fix anyway, until I can get a new filler tube section, or maybe just the hose that connects the tube to the tank, which is what you have a link to. Besides, I'd be surprised if the rubber is really different.

I primarily wanted to share my experience because of the location of the hole, and the relative confusion associated with that code.

actually, thats one thing that is really different. Hoses that are abel to withstand fuel is al ot more expensive. You can use fuel lines for radiator liens, but i wouldn't recommend using radiator lines for fuel since it will eat it up. Get it changed asap.

I found this site.

From googling, it seems that most rad hose and fuel line is made from the same, or very close to the same, rubber. The difference is the fluoroelastomer lining in the fuel line specifically to resist hydrocarbon based fuels.

I try not to be intentionally stubborn, I just like facts to define my actions. There is a lot of hearsay out there when it comes to cars. I'll pick up one of the hoses that pmohr suggested to patch my filler tube as soon as I can.
