making a pop-charger...

ok guys i need help with this. last summer i bought my friend a k&n cylindrical (spelt right?) filter for his formula firebird. well he had it in for about a month or so and his brakes went out sending his car into a guard rail, he was fine but the car is gone. anyways he gave me the filter so i decided to try and make an intake out of it. the thing is, its cylindrical NOT a cone so can i still do it? do i have to seal off the side somehow? heres some pics of it that describe it better than i do. thanks a lot!

Hmm, You could probably get some silicone sealant and a piece of plastic to cap one end. Then press it up against your MAFS and duct tape it on.

Or you could sell it to another firebird owner and buy yourself a cone K&N and the adapter.

Well the thing is, if it had a slight lip on one end, then yes you could make an adapter and attach it to it with a big radhose clamp.

There doesnt look like you can clamp or put a bolt in anywhere on that. I guess you could glue an adapter onto it but it may fall off from vibrations.

u know what? i wonder if i can glue a rubber lip on it. like a piece of rubber something or another and glue it down with silicon then clamp the bltch on! i dunno, sounds kinda ghetto... btw, what all do i take out besides my stock airbox?

It may be ghetto but it'll sound much better than an airbox. There is an adapter that I bought from Summit racing for my CONE filter. You could probably get that, glue/duct-tape a lip onto that cylindrical filter and clamp it onto the adapter.
You basically only need to take out the airbox, u can leave the ram air system or take it off too, wont make a difference.
If your car is a 95 or 96, then u'll have to zap strap the temp. sensor to something so it doesnt flap around.

Good luck

Why would it not work? It may not look pretty but whatever, he can save the 90 bux and get a set of clear corner lenses. Are you saying that all the racers and pit crews out there that use duct tape are using it because it doesnt work?

A drop in filter wont do anything if he wants the intake "growl". And he's already got a perfectly good K&N filter, why buy another one? If he wants it to LOOK nice, then he may as well get a CAI.

ok, i already wasted my money on a drop-in for my car that did jack shlt and if i can make a mak-shift pop charger instead of wasting 90 friggin dollars (which i wouldn't do anyway since a cai is only like $100 more) and i DO give a damn about my own car!

Nice to hear it works fine!
Im selling my car because at 19, I'd rather be moved out and own a decent sports car, than live at home with huge car payments for a nice sedan which I have to lug around all my friend in.
I guess thats the way its gotta work when you get no support from your family

Let's see how it came out

Here's my "cheap" install. It's not shiny like the JWT, but it is functionally the same.

Intake install
