Does CEL ever throw you a fake code?

So the deal is that my 99i30t CEL turned on last Weds so I took it to my mech. It threw codes for a KS and catalytic converter... costed me 1300 to repair (I know I probably paid too much - but I needed the car). While just reading the manual today, I found out that low fuel can also turn on the CEL. Wed was also the lowest I've ever ran the tank down to w/o refueling... though it didn't turn on the gas light yet. Also, I thought it's sorta weird that it would throw up 2 codes at a time instead of one and then another one later. So my ques is if my car can ever throw a fake code or is a code a code and I didn't waste 1300 (at least not all of it). Should I shoot myself for....

Where are you reading that a low fuel level can throw a code? What code?

The KS code was likely already there, you just didn't know about it.

Exactly what code was thrown for the converter? Catalyst efficiency, rear O2?

Mechanic raped you on that 1. Anyway, I've never heard of low fuel level throwing a code. You mean low octane gas?

low gas triggers a low fuel light, not a cel, and the mechanic triple charged you for all the repairs dont go to him again
