That's exactly where i have my Harmon Kardon DP1us screen mounted.

It's ugly though, as I still have to trim the ashtray ...uh...trim...to fit around the mounting base. That, or I'll just get a HU that has an iPod connection

From what I understand 99% when laser hits you you're toast. I've been sprayed with laser and it alerts, but I've never been speeding when it happened. There was one time where I swear it saw laser about 30 seconds before I reached the cop but I can't confirm it. The best way to use the laser alerts is to figure out where the cops tend to be at when you're driving normal.

The V1 has saved me from multiple tickets, usually when I'm cruising a little too far above the limit and not paying enough attention. It still makes sense to drive smart and slow down for hills/overpasses/etc.

I had a V1 (friends) on when I drove from NY to VA (didn't have it on in VA though cause it's illegal there). Picked up a lot of construction crap, but also picked up every cop we saw. Seems to work okay. I think we just had it on the wrong mode.

I did see a few laser alerts (like 3).

Sweet. How did you make yours? I just used a wee bit of JB weld. Interesting to see one designed for a different style of iPod!

To the best of my knowledge there IS a write-up for this that was done by someone else a few years ago, but it's not great and makes it seem way more difficult than it actually is. I did my setup from scratch using my own methods and found it to be pretty easy. I may post write-up eventually, as I did take a TON of pictures as I made mine in case I decided to do a write-up.

I did this a few years ago. I don't believe there was a write-up at the time... But I'll try to recall from memory:

1. Cut out a hole in the bottom of the ash tray holder large enough for the ipod connector to go through; used a dremel cutting wheel. I also hacked the crap out of the ash tray insert (part that pulls out). So if I ever had to go back to stock all i have to do is get a new insert from a junk yard.
2. Since I wouldn't be able to push the little buttons on the side of the ipod cable to release, I had to grind down those little metal prongs on the wire that hold the ipod fast; used the dremel grinding wheel for this.
3. To seat the ipod I used one of those little plastic adapters that come with almost every clock radio, stereo, etc. that support ipod. The length of the adapter was almost the exact width of the ash tray insert.
4. I wanted to be able to close the ash tray when not in use, so I had to make the plastic adapter sit flush with the top of the ash tray insert. Again, used the dremel to cut out the sides of the insert.
5. Used some sort of glue for plastics to glue the ipod connector (wire) to the bottom of the adapter.
6. Test fit the adapter (with the ipod connected) to check clearance over the lip of the storage bay above. Once everything looked right, I glued the adapter to the ash tray.
7. Now I was left with a couple gaps on the front and back of the adapter. I used wood filler putty and basically just filled the entire ash tray insert with it. This solidified the wire, adapter and insert. I then sanded the top of the thing to make it smooth and follow the contour of the insert. (note on putty used: It’s the stuff that has two parts. You cut what you need and knead it together. Dries pretty quickly. I used this stuff because it dries to the consistency of wood and is easily sandable.)
8. Painted black for a finished look.

If anyone’s interested I can take some more pics of the underside.

~Gavin

Nice! I will have to put mine there too. I like to hide my goodies though, does anyone know if it can be put in that storage box right above the ashtray?

BTW, we have like the same exact setup, black leather SE interior, i30 autodim, detector hardwired above the mirror. BTW, can you still lower your drivers sunvisor? My Cobra XRS9600 impedes the sunvisor so I put it on the passenger side.

Im sure you could with some modification but i would put something underneath the top side of the apexi so it would be more at a angle. but a alternitive to having it in that storage would be to put it in the center armrest.

My GPS is my 15.4" laptop, which sits on the passenger seat, don't think u need a pic of that do u?

Cell phone sits in the valley of the shifter boot. Again, don't think u really need a pic to visualize that.

Here is my sirius radio and radar detector hardwired.

Its an older model sirius sportster replay. This means it runs on 12v so I cut off the cig adapter and tapped into the back of the cig lighter. The new ones run on 5v so you would have to install another hidden cig lighter to get this kind of install.

My headunit has an rca input that I split with a radio shack RCA y cable to allow me to have an aux plug for ipods, mp3 players, cell phones, laptops, etc. That headphone jack just snakes out of my ebrake boot and I pull it in and out of there when I want it. The other end of the y goes right into the sirius dock (hidden through the back of the vinyl covered bracket). I don't have to deal with the fm transmitter and get great sound. I have a ground loop eliminator installed but I still hear a bit of a wine on talk stations with the volume loud while accelerating. The sirius antenna and power cable both plug in to the dock thru holes i drilled in the bracket. You cannot see any wires or plugs for the Sirius in the car.

I am able to pull the sirius out of the cradle when I park to deter anyone from breaking in.

The radar detector runs down through the defrost vent in the dash and is wired to the back of the cig lighter. I've had the radar for about 6 years now, it worked great and still does for spotting all types of radar tho the speaker has gone out and it only flashes now, no volume.

I had the pictures of the install hosted somewhere but think they may have been deleted. Most image hosting sites are blocked at my work so its hard to tell. Here is a thread I did about the install. I'm very happy with it, doesn't look like a crappy thing suctioned to the windshield like most ppl with satellite radio.

Link to original install thread

Here are some crappy cell phone pics I snapped on my lunch break.

Nope, my drivers side visor blocks it too. I put it on the drivers side because I got tired of passengers knocking it down and I can actually still use the visor as long as I unclip it from the hook.

FYI everyone:
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...r-install.html

It was just discovered that apparently Maxima 1995-1997 SE and GLE models have the connector for the I30 autodim mirror wrapped in blue OEM tape right next to the sunroof motor. I have the connector in my 1997 SE and didn't even notice it when wiring up my mirror.

I did the same thing with mine a few months back. Yes, I used the same hardwire cables as well. You can unscrew the plastic casing to allow a better fit (I'm pretty sure that's the only way to get it to fit). I used hotglue to hold the board in place after I drilled out the hole for the Mute and Alert (I didn't want to see the On light). Then peel the plastic sticker off and put it on the blank panel and TADA!

I got it off ebay a few years back. I think it was labeled "Maxima 20th anniversary shift ****." It's the exact same dimensions as stock just with a shiny metal cap on it.

I just picked up a 3 port 12v plug plus 1 usb port that plugs into the cig lighter, it fits perfectly width wise in the console box, almost like it was designed to go in there. I plan to hard wire it over the next week and possibly put a couple of mounts for phone/ipod. I'll post pics when I do and the brand of the item. I was looking for stereo amp wire stuff and it was right there beside it all, not near the other ones.

Kids are always wanting to charge phones or ipods. My original thought was to buy a different round one and try to hack it to fit the ash tray. Not like I'll use it for anything else, other than maybe a coin cup
