Tire rubbing?

Alright, help me out here. 99 5spd, 18" enkei's, kyb/agx all around. I have a strange sound coming from the drivers side wheel area, like the sound you would hear from hitting the rumble strip on the highway. It will start making the sound around 15-20 mph and get a higher pitch when going faster. The sound stops if I turn the wheel to the right, and stays about the same maybe more if I turn left. I have read about wheel bearings and the sound is not the same, I have also taken the wheel off and turned it using a stud and there was no sound. WTF is going on here? I have checked for rubbing and can't find anything.

wheel bearing, not all that go bad sound the same, mine sounded like rubber rubbing or slight metal screeching, some sound like humming, all in the mph range you stated.

throw in your little spare tire. there's no way that'll rub, and test again. I don't know it it sucks or not. wheel bearings are if remember right ~$75 at dealership + 2 seals $15 each ~ $100 parts. I think it cost me $140 to install so $245 total. It'll cost you more to replace tires, no?

the way you described the sound definitely points to the wheel bearing. make sure it is torqued to spec before you buy the part. i learned the hard way--paid $200 for my entire hub assembly; went to replace it and all it needed was a torque down; and when i returned it, I lost 20% to 'restocking fee'

Hi, I have same problem. how do you test if the hub is good? I jack the car up and check for tire movement specific to the hub and none. Is there a better way?

Just an update, replaced the wheel bearing and all sounds are gone. I got the bearing for $30 and the seals for $15 a piece. All in all it wasn't a hard job to do, pretty straight forward. I just removed the whole hub assembly and took it to get it pressed out. I think it took me ~4 hrs including time to go to the shop to get the bearing pressed out. Car rides nice and smooth now. If anyone has to do this just follow the write-ups.
