Holy Hell! 600$ Knock sensor job!

When I bought my car the old owner left his old repair bills etc in the glove box, and today i went thru it to see what he repaired on the car so far.

DAMN!

Check out his bill for a knock sensor replacement from a local garage:

OBDII Test (i guess thats to decode the check engin?): 49.95
Knock Sensor replace: 296.90
Labour: 170.00
Special 5w30 oil change: 25.95
Oil: 0.00
Oil filter: 0.00
Gasket Sealer: 38.60

SubTotal Pieces: 411.40
SubTotal labour: 170.00
GST: 40.70
QST: 46.66

TOTAL: 668.76!!!

GatttDAMN!
(Edit: is that what people normally pay for this kind of job???)

After checking my ECU,
I received a knock sensor code (yea again, he was probably feeding it regular?), so i went and ordered one on ebay for 25 + 5$ shipping, I'll attempt to do it myself with my friend using the write-up one of the members did a couple weeks ago, and hopefully everything goes ok so i wont have to pay no 600$ lol!!!

Damnn, thank god for this website!
such a great community and so knowledgeable!

In the manuals it says you have to take off the upper intake manifold. That is where the labor cost comes from.

in reality I bet they didnt and it took the tech 30 minutes to do it.

I like how they charged him $50 to plug a scan tool into your car for twenty seconds.

Im not surprised an OEM sensor from Nissan costs that much.

Most shops and dealers charge an hour of labor to scan codes.

Current price:
22060-30P00, $155.99 each at Courtesy

It's not too unbelievable, that at Nissan dealer pricing (at the time) and shop markup, that it reached $300.

But still,

Sometimes just a bit of information can save you lots of money.

just make sure when you do go and change your Knock Sensor, your car has not been running for a few hours.. hot intake manifold makes the task a little harder..

I don't see what year Maxima you have...... pulling the IM on a 99 is pretty much a must, other years no. Still, a high bill for any year Max.

If you don't have a 99, the previous owner really got ripped off IMO.

Wizz ... why is a 99' any different, same IM isn't it? Good to know none the less, but it does make me wonder.

I can believe a bill like that ... depending on the shop, mark up of parts, and 'actual' labor. I wouldn't wanna pay it, but if the guy didn't know any better, well .... all I can say is TGFTO (thank God for the .Org!) lol

The IM's are the same for all years, but the 99 has a bunch of other emission crap (swirl valve and associated components, butterfly valves in lower manifold etc). As a result, it's nearly impossible to change the KS on a 99 w/o removing the IM, way too much stuff in the way. The KS is also a little further back under the IM in a 99.

Well, $170 for the labor isn't too outrageous, it's the $300 knock sensor that is ridiculous.

Agreed. I was insinuating that $170 for labor on a 99 Max was fair, but for other years was too high. Cost of KS was way too high period.

No way do you have to remove the manifold to replace the ks on a 99 maxima. Took me about 15 minutes to change out mine on the 99. Its a tight fit to get your hand in there to remove the electrical connector, but it can be done.

You must be referring to a cali spec 99 because I was able to change my KS on my 99 Fed spec no problem. Some cuts and scrapes but no need to remove the IM.

Typical shop charge is to mark up the parts cost 100% over purchase price, so they make money on the parts AND labor..

but yeah.. that's a pretty typical price for a knock sensor replacement job from a shop. too bad we know better.

Same reason shops charge $120 a side to replace axle seals. It takes 10 minutes if you know what you're doing... most people don't.

I just received the sensor today in the mail, will change it if weather is nice tomorrow.
I'll use the writeup found in the forums as guide, but if anybody got any extra tips/tricks etc that would be great

I've done a few '99 cali specs without pulling the plenums, but honestly it's 6 or 1/2 dozen either way on those damn things. The 5th gen's blow with the de-k's block thermostat in the way, getting that coolant line off is a *****.
