New goodies from Budget Exhaust

Hi gang.. As the crazed soul who convinced Jeff at Budget to make me the first 'prototype' Y-pipe a couple years back, he asked that I drop in and let you catch a glimpse of what the Cat-back system might look like.

We are just putting the finishing touches on the cat-back for my WRX, and I have some pics on my website.

I'll leave Jeff alone for a week or so, so he can build the exhaust for your cars, before we go back to work on my hot-rod.

When you get to the site, go to the mods section, then exhaust is at the bottom. The can we used on the muffler is identical to the one planned for the Max, before it gets squished to fit the spave you guys have. The construction and finish will be otherwise similar.

I am happy to answer any questions about my exhaust (other than the price, since it too is the prototype)...

Re: New goodies from Budget Exhaust

A catback system that wont require a 2 month wait and will most likely be $100-$150 cheaper than its competition? I must be dreaming. This will certainly be interesting.

Thanks for the update!

It doesnt look that bad. They made teh muffler themselves? Is the muffler stuff was fibreglass?

Is there a reason why the welded the bends instead of doing a 1 piece or just b/c its still a prototype?

Yeah.. We looked at several muffler options, and all of them were way too small, or overpriced. Back when I had my Max, Jeff and I were going to build our own muffler.

Anwyays, we have the cans cut and wrapped, and then weld on the end-plates as well as the perf tubing inside. The muffler is packed with ceramic stuffing.

Result, this is very very quiet. In fact, even my girlfriend (Kelly) mentioned that it sounded almost like stock. I know lots of people think loud is cool, but I am not of that 'game'.

With my position at the magazine (Audio Editor of Performance Auto and Sound (www.pasmag.com), I have been in touch with several of the special detachements of the Toronto Regional Police. If you have seen the special on street racing that filmed here, you know we have a few issues. The police have plans to come down hard on street racers and their cars next summer, and as such, anything that makes a car stand out, will catch their attention. The decision to keep the system quiet, while still allowing gases to flow through the straight-through design. Truly the best of both worlds!

On my WRX, I made a couple runs last night in the cold (not the cars favourite temperature) and knocked off a 1/4 mile at 14.13 @ 103.6 MPH. 0-60 was 5.53 seconds. I'm OK with that.

DCMax, I can't see any reason why there would be a 2-month wait. Maybe a week if the guys are busy, but not much more. As for pricing, you guys already know Jeff's reputation for being somewhat agressive in that territory.

Synki, We have priced out having the pipe bent for us on a Mendrel machine, but there are a couple issues. 1, price (they want over $30.00) to do each bend for use. 2, the proximity of the bends to each other, the quick right-left in my system makes it kinda hard, and they do need to be that close.

Thanks for the questions guys...

what other mods are you running on your WRX .... injen CAI or blow off valve .... installed the Injen CAI - wow what a pain in my ****... filed some of the circle so the pipe would fit through....
taking the bumper off is a pain in and of itself....but i love the sound of the turbo after the intake went on.

the blow off valve will be going on tonight .... definetly interested in your catback exhaust.... also thought about the titanium-CF exhaust but i dont feel like droppin a G for the exhaust.

id also appreciate if you could post what the exhaust for the WRX looks like from the perspective of " if you were behind it at a light" ... like an **** shot of the car. that would be great....

Bump..

Still working on prototyping and pricing...

Other mods on the WRX include the TurboXS Unichip and a K&N filter.

No plans for an intake.. I want the car as quiet as possible...

How loud is it expected to be? I would love a cat back but not all the noise. Any idea?

Perfect Actually. I mean I would love the stock sound or maybe a little louder if I had to with some decent power from the cat back. No need for everyone in the world to know it is there. Any general Ideas on price? Even a range or what we should expect?
