Trunk Mount Bike Rack on Maxima?

Hey guys, was just wondering if any of you have used a trunk mount bike rack on the back of a 4th gen??

im kinda tired of stuffing it in the back seat and planning on just getting one, but they don't seem to be listed on fitment guides for the 4th gen, just wondering if anyones used one without any problem

thanks!

Zubair

I have this one (though mine only holds two bikes).

It clears the spoiler fine and is very solid since it grips the trunk with 6 straps (2 from the top, 2 from the bottom, and 1 from each side).

After several years of occasional use I can see where it has rubbed the paint a bit where the foam padding hits the top of the trunk.

Edit: the brand is Saris.

I take off both wheels and stick the bike in the trunk.

+1 on the Saris Bones rack (same as above). I have had the 2 bike version for about 8 years on my '98 Max. Mine holds both bikes very securely with little bounce and virtually no lateral movement. It is even possible to open the trunk with a single bike on the rack (but lower it gently).

My first choice was the Saris Bones 2 or 3 rack but I couldn't find a decent used one so I ended up with a Yakima King Joe 2 rack. Fits fine on the 96 Max.

All positive comments here.

I have a 96 and had a terrible experience with a trunk rack

I equate the whole thing to just a terrible design of a cheap rack but the 95-96 rear bumper is really short and on the highway heading up to the mountain the rack slipped off hte rear bumper, dented the crap out of my trunk lid and did a good nuimber on my two beautiful DH bikes,

I got a roof rack but its just a pain getting bikes lifted up and onto the roof without damaging the car.

my advice is yea trunk racks are convenient, jsut get a really good quality one.

All the time, 2 bikes - never a problem.

I used one on Wednesday, it's a portable one, I think the brand name is Hollywood? I'll see if I can find more info.

Only thing I hate is when it rubs the paint.

One note on the paint rubbing... It just seems to scuff the clear coat a little bit after repeated use. I polished the car the other day and and the marks went away.

The trunk mount rack makes accessing the trunk nearly impossible. For a long run, you might want to consider roof rack instead.

I never have a problem getting in my trunk with the rack and bikes on, guess it's how you mount it.

Ha, funny this thread resurfaced. Last night the wife had a neighboor kid fit our bike carrier to the Max to transport three bike to the lake for ridig. Everything was good to and half back from the lake when the carrier fell off the car with bikes attached. Doh! What a freakin' yards sale. Luckily all that was banged up were the bikes and carrier. Looks like the kids will be getting new bikes and I'll be getting a new bike carrier.
