Aftermarket ECU vs Reprogrammed Stock ECU

I was just wondering which is better to get a ECU from someone like JWT or one of those devices that reprogram your stock ECU. They say it will give you the same effect so I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this ?

The UPRD ECU is supposed to show some gains. Check out www.maximadriver.com for details.

I know I'm on the other side of the world but personally I'll be trying the Unichip aftermarket 'piggyback' computer after I've finished some planned mild performance upgrades.

http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/unichip/unichip.htm

I can't see any advantages something like a JWT ECU would have over a fully programmable unit. Tuning after different mods with the Unichip is as simple as paying for a couple of hours dyno time at any Unichip dealer, no having to remove the ECU and send it away for what really must be a 'shot in the dark' result.

Not sure how much these units would be selling for in the US but out here (Aust) the price for a full Unichip set-up is the same as having a JWT imported. The Unichip also has widespread, independant and dyno proven support from the performance world in everything from SR20DET Silvias to LS1 HSV V8's which is something the 're-chipped' ECUs here don't.

I'm not sure what your trying to say so pick yourself up and have another go. If you have reasons why aftermarket management on a Max would be BS I'm very interested.

Ok cool. After reading all the search results for the Unichip I can see the vibe is bad. That surprises me because in Australia they are very popular and I've never, ever heard of anyone going slower than stock after being properly tuned. It is not another Venom 400.

However, all Unichips here are tuned on eddy current 'Dyno Dynamics' Dynos, not Dynojets without a 'load' feature. Maybe the maps tuned on a Dyno without load contributed to the increases in Dyno power that didn't carry over to the track/road.

I'm no tuning expert but that seems to be the only major difference that would could explain its poor showing over there, other than the fact we can map for 98 octane unleaded thats available at most stations. I can see why it would be written off in peoples minds after the past experiences posted here though, not good.
