CEL with engine running but not in "ON" position, no codes

The thread title pretty much describes the issue...I have no idea what's going on or where to look. I'm not noticing any real performance issues or hearing anything abnormal. To clarify, it comes on with the engine running, but if I only turn the key to "ON", or if I start it, then turn off the engine with the car still "ON", the CEL is not lit.

If it means anything, the CEL came on almost immediately after following a car pouring out exhaust smoke for a few blocks last night. Could it be that the other car's smoke got in my intake and tripped the CEL, and it doesn't actually mean anything?

Take it to a auto store and get your codes scanned then come back (or search on here how to do it).

We can't help you until you do.

I'm quite familiar with how to check the codes on my own. I did that before I posted this thread. As stated in the thread title, there are no codes.

How about checking your ignition switch. The CEL should come on when its in the ON position and then go off when the motor is running.

Check it how? Honestly, I'd be a bit surprised if the ignition switch was the issue, but I still have no idea what's going on. I'm gonna try checking for codes again later today.

usually when the CEL doesnt come on when just on the on positiion there is something wrong with the ECU. That is how one would usually see if the ECU is working correctly. If you have a spare ECU id try swapping it out

I don't have an extra ECU, nor do I have the funds to pick one up.
