hard time starting on cold starts

I have a hard time starting on cold starts. I'm cranking it, its trying real hard to start. Sometimes the rpm moves a little, but it won't start even if I keep holding it. However, if crank it for a few seconds, then switch the key from 'on' to 'off' and then switch back from 'off' to 'on', it turns on. I'm not sure of the problem. I check the voltage of the battery and its at 12.2 volts.

I'm not sure on all the reasons -- I live in a climate where there is rarely snow, so "cold" for me might mean 50 to 60 F. My cold starting improved when I changed the knock sensor. Your situation may be different, and related to a number of possible electrical or mechanical problems.
