99 Max stays running after I pull key out ignition

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I am now having this problem.
I started up the car a lot of smoke and gas started coming out of the tail pipe.
I tried to turn the car off and took key out of the ignition and it kept running (really bad running felt like only 1 cylinder was firing) This went on for a few minutes then it finally died down.
